Jessica Eye Looking to Bounce Back Against Julianna Pena at UFC 192 on October 3

2015-JessicaEye-vs-JuliannaPena-Odds

It didn’t take long for Jessica “Evil” Eye – 11-3, 3 KOs, 1 SUB – to get another fight. The UFC No. 6 women’s bantamweight will fight less than three months after losing to Miesha Tate in a title eliminator in late July. Meeting her in the octagon is TUF Season 18 winner Julianna Pena, who has yet to lose inside the octagon.

CLIMBING THE BANTAMWEIGHT LADDER

In a division ruled by Ronda Rousey, it’s tough to garner any attention. But in a thin weight class, all it takes is a few wins to enter the title picture. It’s how a fighter like Eye, who is 1-2-1 inside the UFC, found herself in a title eliminator with Miesha Tate. Evil validated herself nicely by taking the fight to the consensus No. 2 fighter in the division, but finds herself at the back of the line nonetheless after a tough loss.

Pena won Season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter with a first-round TKO of Jessica Rakoczy. Unfortunately, she suffered a grotesque knee injury that kept her out of action for nearly a year and a half. She recently came back to score a TKO over Miland Dudieva this past April, showing off some of the promise she had earned as a 26-year old prospect.

Although neither woman appears close to Ronda Rousey’s level, the fact that they have yet to face Rowdy works in there favor. The UFC desperately needs warm bodies to throw in with their champion, who at this point is a money-making machine for the promotion. Should Eye or Pena showcase marked improvement, they could find themselves in a title eliminator, perhaps against Amanda Nunes, very soon.

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Eye is a high-output, low-power striker by nature. She’s very technical with her standup, working behind a crisp jab-right cross combination. Although she lacks the power to stagger her opponents, the accumulation of damage from her combinations is often enough to take fights on points.

Pena was one of the best prospects in the division before essentially destroying her right knee in training. She proved that this is still the case after UFC Fight Night 63, when she returned to dominate Milana Dudieva. If she can continue her progression, I think she has enough raw talent to surprise and overwhelm Eye. The pick Pena to win by unanimous decision.
