McGregor Power Position
The win by McGregor over Alvarez at UFC 205 was dominant as McGregor knocked out Alvarez in the second round after punishing him in the first round. After the win, McGregor announced he is going to be a father and he said that he wants equity in the UFC going forward.
“One announcement, I'm going to be a daddy early next year," McGregor said. "I'm crapping me jocks, I'm not going to lie. I don't even know what way to take it. It's messing with me head because I don't want to be bringing a child into this. I'm just going to have this baby, take a little bit of time and see what way I feel after that."
McGregor also said that he wants to get paid in a big way by the UFC, specifically equity. McGregor said he has not talked to new UFC owners Ari Emaneul and Patrick Whitesell but that they are going to have to come to him. "They've got to come talk to me now. Cause no one has come talk to me since the sale happened as a businessman. I've been approached as a 'hello' and that type of stuff but I've earned something.” McGregor said, “Who owns the company now? There's people that have shares in the company, celebrities, Conan O'Brien owns the UFC now. So where's my share? Where's my equity?"
UFC 205 was expected to generate a record amount of money including $17 million for the gate at Madison Square Garden, a new UFC record. The pay-per-view record was also expected to be shattered. McGregor said he wants a piece of the pie. "I'm aware of my worth and now I've got a family. Now I've got a kid on the way. I'm coming for mine now if you want me back," McGregor said. "You want me to be around, stick around and help service that debt and help push the company -- bring me on board for real. Not just as this. I need to be set for life with this. If you want me to be truly in on this, I need to be all in on this, proper, as owner. Have an equity stake in the company. So that's what I'm looking for."
Tate Retires
Miesha Tate was beaten by Raquel Pennington at UFC 205 and after the defeat, Tate announced she was done. “I am announcing my retirement, you guys,” Tate said, “I love you all so much. I have been doing this for more than a decade. It is the right time. It is because of the result. I have a lot more to give and I couldn’t get it out of myself.”
Tate won the bantamweight title at UFC 197 when she beat Holly Holm but at UFC 200 Tate was dominated by Amanda Nunes.
Nurmagomedov Demands Title Shot
If there was ever a fighter who deserved a title shot it is Khbib Nurmagomedov who dominated Michael Johnson at UFC 205. Nurmagomedov is now 24-0 in his career including 8-0 in the UFC. He said he deserved a title shot more than McGregor. “What do you think?” Nurmagomedov said, “Do you think I deserve (a title shot)? It’s like, we don’t know, maybe. … What are you talking about?”
Jedrzejczyk Dominates Again
The best female strawweight fighter in the world is Joanna Jedrzejczyk and it isn’t close. She defeated Karoline Kowalkiewicz at UFC 205 winning by unanimous decision as all three judges scored the fight 49-46. There was one brief moment when Jedrzejczyk got hurt and fell but she bounced right back up.
"I wasn't hurt that badly," Jedrzejczyk said. "It was just for a second. I felt great. I felt I controlled the fight. Polish girls are the toughest in the world. I'm very happy she and other Polish fighters joined the UFC."
Jedrzejczyk is now the second-longest current champion in the UFC, behind only Demetrious Johnson. "You know why I stay champion?" Jedrzejczyk said. "I'm humble every day. I'm very focused. I challenge myself every day. That's why I'm still a champion."
Woodley Retains Title in Draw vs. Thompson
Tyron Woodley kept his welterweight title as he fought to a majority draw against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205. The judges had it 47-47 on two cards and one card 48-47 in favor of Woodley. It was just the third time a UFC title fight ended in a draw.
Woodley had a big first round against Thompson taking him down but he couldn’t finish him and Thompson bounced back in the second and third rounds.
