Reading Between the Betting Lines: UFC 192 Edition

2015-UFC192-Main-Storylines-Odds

While most fans are calling UFC 194: Aldo vs. McGregor the most stacked card of 2015, you could also make the same argument for UFC 192. Headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustaffson, the card also has three possible title eliminators. What more could you ask for?

HOW WILL 205 FARE WITHOUT BONES?

With pound-for-pound king Jon Jones on the sidelines battling legal issues, Daniel Cormier has laid claim to the divisional title. While he’s a worthy champion who’s beaten top guys at both heavyweight and light heavyweight, he’s not the generational talent that Bones is.

The matchup against Alexander Gustaffson is an intriguing one, featuring the Swede’s rangy boxing style against Cormier’s power wrestling game, but it resides squarely in the shadow of the man that everyone feels is still the true champion. Even if it turns out to be a fight for the ages, it’s difficult to see that narrative changing.

OUR CURRENT ODDS: Cormier at -360, Gustaffson at +280

CAN GUSTAFFSON BOUNCE BACK?

Alexander Gustaffson had the opportunity of a lifetime: to secure another title shot in front of a rabid hometown crowd in his native Sweden. Anthony Johnson then gave him the beating of his life, knocking the Swede senseless with a brutal TKO in the first round. Thoroughly humiliated, Gustaffson openly wept in the post-fight interview. Later, he he publicly admitted that he contemplated retirement.

But coming off that loss, he gets another title shot. How we responds to the worst loss of his career is perhaps the most compelling storyline of the night.

IS “SUGA” STILL SWEET?

The last time Rashad Evans was in the octagon, the year was 2013 - a time when Donald Trump was still just a TV personality and the latest iPhone was the 5s. Primitive times indeed. But prior to that, Evans was long considered one of the best 205ers in the world, having beaten the likes of Thiago Silva, Rampage Jackson, Phil Davis and Dan Henderson.

Now, Evans is 35 years old and coming off major injury. He’s always been one of the faster, more athletic fighters in the division, but we have yet to see if he’s retained his physical blessings. Ryan Bader, who’s won four in a row to force himself into the title picture, is the perfect test to see whether Evans still belongs among the elite.

OUR CURRENT ODDS: Evans at -160, Bader at +130

JOHNY ON THE SPOT

Former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks wants the belt back. He’s both beaten and lost to the man currently holding it, Robbie Lawler. After Lawler became the first man in the post-GSP era to defend the 170-pound belt after a thriller against Rory MacDonald, many thought Hendricks would be next in line. After all, his first two bouts against Lawler were spectacular fights in their own rights.

But the UFC had other plans. Now, he’ll have to get through a top-5 opponent in Tyron Woodley. Like Hendricks, Woodley possesses superb wrestling and knockout power, and I have a feeling this fight will be a lot closer than the odds show.

OUR CURRENT ODDS: Hendricks at -280, Woodley at +220
