The Biggest Favorite at UFC 191 is Paige VanZant against Alex Chambers

Paige-VanZant-vs-Alex-Chambers.ac

Paige VanZant – 5-1, 1 KO, 1 SUB – is eager to keep proving that she’s more than just a pretty face.

Already a star with just six pro fights, VanZant will look to inch closer to a title shot when she steps into the ring against Alex Chambers – 5-2, 2 KOs, 2 SUBs. Oddsmakers aren’t giving Chambers much of a shot to derail “12-Gauge’s” hype train.

CURRENT ODDS

Our UFC 191 odds currently list VanZant as a 15-to-1 favorite, with a -1500 money line. Chambers checks in at +700. The total on this three-round fight is likely to be set at 2.5 rounds, with the over in chalk territory. PAIGE, SHE’S SO HOT RIGHT NOW

When the UFC announced that Paige VanZant would be one of the few fighters to sign a personal sponsorship deal with new sponsor Reebok, there was a ton of grumbling from her peers. Personal deals weren’t even extended to all the champions, yet a fighter with five pro fights had made the cut. It’s obvious that Reebok wanted to cash in on her good looks, which further ticked off the more accomplished women warriors of the UFC.

But VanZant quieted a lot of naysayers with a dominant win over an established vet in Felice Herrig at UFC on Fox 15, and there’s no question that she’s one of the brighter prospects in a thin 115-pound division. The 21-year old is one of the youngest active fighters on the roster, and she has shown marked improvement with each fight.

Now, she’ll face Chambers, who enters the matchup after the most significant victory of her career. Chambers mounted an impressive comeback to best Kallin Curran at UFC Fight Night 65, to raise her record to 3-1 in her past four. The win followed an unsuccessful UFC debut against Aisling Daly at the TUF 20 Finale, when she tapped out to a first-round armbar.

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Even at 36 years old, Chambers is fast athlete with good hand speed and polished submissions. However, she is severely lacking when it comes to her wrestling. That has proven to be a great foil, as she can be taken down, controlled and beaten down with ground-and-pound.

VanZant is still extremely raw, as shown in her fight against Herrig. However, she applies relentless pressure and a punishing pace that few can keep up with. She is not a great striker and is too hittable right now, but she is extremely durable under fire.

While Chambers might be the more skilled fighter, it’s hard to see withstanding VanZant’s all-out offense over three rounds. I see Paige working her over in the clinch for the better part of the fight and taking an easy unanimous decision.
