The UFC’s top three toughest divisions and odds for their upcoming major fights

The-Top3-Toughest-Divisions-Conor-McGregor.ac

There are 10 divisions in the UFC, and it’s obvious some are stronger than others. And then there are a few that are absolutely loaded with talent. It’s time to take a look at the best weight classes in the promotion - and if there are big fights on the horizon, we’ve got some odds for you to play with.

1. Lightweights - 155 pounds

Champion: Rafael dos Anjos

Major upcoming fights

December 11: Khabib Nurmogomedov -280 vs. Tony Ferguson +230

December 19: Rafael dos Anjos -320 vs. Donald Cerrone +250

Take a look at the UFC’s rankings of this division. You’ve got Tony Ferguson, who’s won six in a row, at No. 9. Beneil Dariush, on a five-fight winning streak is No. 10. That’s just insane. There’s 5-6 legitimate title contenders right now, including guys like Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Rafael dos Anjos, the current champion, cannot get too comfortable when there’s a murderer’s row like this in the wings.

2. Featherweights - 145 pounds

Champion: Jose Aldo, Conor McGregor

Major upcoming fights

December 12: Jose Aldo +145 vs. Conor McGregor -175

December 11: Chad Mendes vs. Frankie Edgar

This is a relatively young division, with both champion Aldo and interim champion McGregor under the age of 30. And most of the top contenders, like Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar, aren’t even close to aging out yet, making sure 145 is stacked with top talent for the next few years. In the UFC rankings, the top eight fighters are all legitimate players in the division, but the dropoff is pretty steep after the top 10.

2. Welterweights - 170 pounds

Champion: Robbie Lawler

Major upcoming fights

October 3: Johny Hendricks - 280 vs. Tyron Woodley +220

November 21: Kelvin Gastelum -160 vs. Matt Brown +130

January 2: Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit

This is an extremely top-heavy division, with the top six guys clearly ahead of the the next 10 fighters. Still, I can watch Johny Hendricks, Rory MacDonald, Tyron Woodley, Carlos Condit, Matt Brown and Demian Maia fight each other over and over again and not get tired of them. There’s also a few bright prospects, like Neil Magny and Kelvin Gastelum, that provides depth for the future.
