LIVE UNDERDOGS
Carlos Condit +115
Lorenz Larkin +195
Lawler is a worthy welterweight champion, but he’s hardly a dominant one. It seems that any of the top 5 in the division could beat each other on any given night. That list includes Condit, whose explosive versatility makes him a threat everywhere. True to his name, “The Natural Born Killer” might have better finishing instincts than anyone in the division. Lawler has a habit of eating a monster hit or two in his fights, and nobody is better equipped to capitalize than Condit.
Lorenz Larkin might be fighting a guy that looks like the next big thing, but I would never count out anyone with his blinding speed and power. His opponent, Albert Tumenov is an extremely aggressive striker, and Larkin just so happens to thrive in delivering one-shot kill counters.
RISKY UNDERDOGS
Andrei Arlovski +200
Diego Brandao +180
Dustin Poirier +190
Arlovski is a sound fundamental kickboxer with enough pop in his strikes to pose a threat to anyone in the division. Unfortunately, he also has a cracked chin that can be exploited by a bruiser like Stipe Miocic. What’s more, Miocic is well-rounded enough to turn this battle into a grind, which does not bode well for Arlovski. Still, in the heavyweight division, all it takes is one good shot to change the fight.
Poirier is good, but not great, lightweight that will probably hover around the top-15 for a year or so. But Duffy is already a good fighter who has a chance to be great. Poirier really doesn’t have elite skill in any one area, and I really don’t see how he can impose his will on the Irishman. He’s well-rounded enough to make it a fight though.
Diego Brandao will never be special, but he’s facing a short-notice replacement who is still very new to the UFC game. So while he may be outgunned in terms of physical skill, he can still outclass Brian Ortega on the prelims.
UNDERDOGS DEAD IN THE WATER
Masanori Kanehara +405
I have yet to see a lighter weight Japanese import compete on a world-class level with the UFC’s best Odds. That doesn’t change here, as Michael McDonald is getting a very winnable fight for his first bout in two years. If McDonald is the same fighter we saw prior to all those injuries, he should easily beat mid-level fighter like Kanehara.
