A historic, champion vs. champion super money fight. That’s what this Saturday’s main event between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez can be described as. And somehow that still doesn’t do its magnitude justice. We’ve never seen a star like “Notorious” capture mainstream headlines, and now he’ll be attempting the first man in history to simultaneously hold titles in two weight classes. Oh yeah, and he’s doing it on the UFC’s first ever trip to the New York, at the legendary Madison Square Garden.
As far as UFC fights go, it just doesn’t get any bigger. You’re gonna want to bet on this. So let’s go over your options.

Odds Analysis
After opening as a -145 favorite, McGregor has dipped slightly to -150. For the most part, he’s staying within this five point range, and I’d expect it to continue barring any late betting surges. Alvarez has gone up about 10 points since opening on October 11, up to +145.
Though this is a five round championship fight, the over/under is 1.5 rounds, the lowest possible total. Oddsmakers have offset that by making the over a -170 play, with the under at +145. McGregor’s power cannot be doubted, as four of his past seven fights have ended before this mark.
Fight Breakdown
McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz forced the Irishman to evolve. He switched up his methods, prepped a specific gameplan for a specific opponent and reportedly spent hundreds of thousands on a quality training camp. The question is whether he does the same for Alvarez.
Up to the Diaz loss, McGregor placed a little too much faith in his ability to knock out opponents. Of course, it’s hard not to buy into your own hype after scoring KO’s in five straight - the latest a 13-second KO of the greatest featherweight in history. And considering that McGregor has all the physical advantages - height, reach and size - it’s easy to see him going back to his usual training regimen.
But that would be a mistake against Alvarez, who has been one of the most consistent underdog performers in recent memory. Though he made a name for himself as a wild brawler - Alvarez owns two Fight of the Year awards - the Philadelphian has become a much more conservative fighter during his UFC run.
A lot of that has to do with his recommitment to wrestling. Against Anthony Pettis, many expected a striking war, but Alvarez dragged the fight to the ground. He did the same to Gilbert Melendez. His one-punch KO of Rafael Dos Anjos just served as a reminder of his elite boxing skill.
As one of the most well-rounded lightweights in a deep division, Alvarez can got in a lot of different directions. Of course, he’s a smaller guy facing the most devastating lightweight striker of the generation - and that’s why he’s a clear underdog in the UFC odds.
Predictions
It’s tough to see Alvarez being able to take down the bigger McGregor. If he can’t do that or keep Mystic Mac pressed against the cage, it’ll be a long night for Alvarez. Against Donald Cerrone, another rangy striker with good kicks, Alvarez had problems all night getting in range to land his game. McGregor’s knockout threat is exponentially higher than Cowboy’s.
UFC odds: McGregor TKO Alvarez, R2
