Alexandre Pantoja is a big favorite to defeat Neil Seery at UFC Fight Night 113 on Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland. Pantoja is 17-2 in his career, including 1-0 in the UFC, while Seery is 16-12, including 3-3 in the UFC. This will be the last fight for Seery, as he has announced his retirement. This fight is one of four on the FS1 portion of the preliminary card, leading up to a six-fight main card, also on FS1, that features Gunnar Nelson vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio. Let’s look at Pantoja vs. Seery and UFC picks.
Bet on UFC at BookMaker.eu
Alexandre Pantoja (17-2, 1-0 UFC)
Pantoja has won his last 10 fights and is coming off a split decision victory against Eric Shelton in January. That fight was the first for Pantoja in the UFC and he just barely got past Shelton.
Pantoja did take part in TUF 24 but those fights are considered exhibitions and don’t count in a fighter’s official record. Pantoja had the top ranking at TUF 24 but he lost in the semifinals to Hiromasa Ogikubo. He did defeat Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara France before losing to Ogikubo.
Pantoja has won four of his last six fights by submission.
Neil Seery (16-12, 3-3 UFC)
Seery is calling it a career after this bout against Pantoja. Seery said to Newstalk.com that he debated about whether or not to retire. He was supposed to fight Ian McCall last year but that fight was scrapped and Seery nearly retired. "Honestly, I did think about packing it in," said Seery. "I was really frustrated the way things had played out in Belfast. The last time I fought was against [Kyoji] Horiguchi last May.”
Seery said that he was ready to retire after facing McCall and it took him some time to get over the disappointment. "I was sick about it. In my head, I wanted to finish my career last year in Belfast. With everything that happened, it just didn’t pan out that way."
Seery said he needs this last fight to close out his career. "I just want to go out and do what I always have done. I want to go out and be a crowd-pleaser," he said. "I’ve outlasted a lot of people in the UFC. I’ve been on the roster for three years, I’ve had six fights under the banner and I’ve never been finished. I was already 34 when I signed on the dotted line for the UFC and every single one of my fights was a contender for a bonus. I’m happy with what I’ve done."
UFC Picks
I think the price on this bout is way too high, as Seery has proven throughout his career he is a very tough fighter. What has Pantoja done to warrant being more than a 3-1 favorite? He just barely beat Shelton last time out. I don’t give Pantoja that much credit for his previous nine wins as they were lower level MMA bouts. I will take the big price and go with Seery to get the win on Sunday.
