Fight Preview
Gillespie entered the UFC as a wrestler/grappler, but he’s already evolved in just two octagon fights. In his debut, the Bellmore Kickboxing product showcased a nice, stiff jab which he expertly followed up with takedown attempts. He looked much more experienced than his record would indicate.
While the jury is still out on just how good Gillespie could be, it’s clear that he is both technical and powerful. In his last outing against Andrew Holbrook, the 29-year old unleashed a left hook that ended the night in just 21 seconds.
Gonzalez is 1-1 thus far in the UFC, but owns the distinction of finishing all of his 11 wins. A southpaw kickboxer with an opportunistic grappling game, Gonzalez often uses pace and output to wear down his opponents. At 27, he is still developing - especially as a wrestler - but the tools to become a pretty good fighter are there.
However, there are already questions about Gonzalez’s chin. He’s been knocked out twice, which is a concern for somebody so young, and Gillespie’s growing confidence in his fists could spell trouble for Gonzalez.
Betting Preview
Because both men have so little octagon time, it’s tough to make clear pick here. We lean Gillespie because his ceiling is higher overall, but the better pick is the rounds under. Gonzalez has only seen a third round just once in 14 fights, and Gillespie has forced seven first round finishes in nine wins.
UFC Odds Pick: Under 1.5 rounds at +120
