Any UFC event in Brazil is worth watching - there are always native stars, contenders and exciting fighters fired up to rep their home country. This Saturday’s UFC Fight NIght 119 is no different, and a former champion is returning to the octagon in the main event.
Lyoto Machida, who recently finished an 18-month suspension for banned substances will meet No. 7 middleweight Derek Brunson in the headlining matchup. A loss at 39 years old would be devastating for “The Dragon”.
Also scheduled to compete is Demian Maia, just one fight removed from a title shot, the fast-rising bantamweight Rob Font and gritty lightweight Jim Miller.
Tons of great fights to get into here. Let’s check the UFC odds at BookMaker.eu and make some picks.
UFC odds at BookMaker.eu
Main Event, Middleweight
Lyoto Machida +135
Derek Brunson -165
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over +135, under -155
Which Brunson Shows Up?
There’s a few different versions of Derek Brunson: the early version who wrestled and GNP’d guys to death, the brawl-or-nothing knockout artist, or the patient counterstriker we saw against Anderson Silva and Daniel Kelly. The thing is, if he could somehow merge all three of those styles, he’d be a legit title contender.
The point is, Brunson has all the tools to be a 39-year old Machida who is coming off an 18-month suspension. Machida has problems against powerful, explosive athletes, and Brunson fits that mold.
UFC Betting Tips
Lay the price on Brunson to win - although don’t bet too much. There’s always a chance Brunson goes full brawler, in which case Machida picks him apart.
UFC odds pick: Small bet on Brunson to win
Co-Main Event, Welterweight
Demian Maia +140
Colby Covington -180
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over -230, under +180
Who Suffocates Who?
There are plenty of fans who believe that Maia will attach himself to Covington and tie him into a pretzel - he’s done it to plenty of fighters far more accomplished than Covington. But this is a bad style matchup for him, we saw how poorly he fared against Jorge Masvidal and Tyron Woodley when he couldn’t take them down, and Covington has the skillset to keep this fight standing.
UFC Betting Tips
10 years younger than Maia, Covington’s high-level wrestling, frenetic pace and bottomless cardio makes him a bad matchup for an aging legend. Maia might be a fine wine, but he is 39 years old.
Bantamweight
Pedro Munhoz +145
Rob Font -185
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over -145, under +125
Font Takes the Next Step
This is a case of a fighter that’s rapidly evolving facing one that has seemingly plateaued. We expected big things from Pedro Munhoz after his short-notice debut against Raphael Assuncao, but he never really fought to that level again. Meanwhile, the 30-year old Font has turned into a scary fighter - his last six victories have all been finishes, with four knockouts and two submission.
UFC Betting Tips
While we lean towards Font, this is a difficult fight to choose a winner - they are both similarly ranked for a reason. The play here is the rounds over as neither man has ever been finished.
Lightweight
Francisco Trinaldo -190
Jim Miller +150
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over -220, under +180
It’s Miller Time?
With over 20 years of professional fighting experience between Francisco Trinaldo and Jim Miller, this fight should offer plenty of high-level exchanges. Each man has distinct advantages in different phases, with Trinaldo’s explosive kickboxing giving him the striking edge, while Miller’s grappling makes him the pick if the fight goes to the mat. On paper, Miller has far more experience against better competition, but it’s Trinaldo who’s been hotter of late.
UFC Betting Tips
Another tough fight to call, but the price on Trinaldo looks playable. Miller is too tough for his own good sometimes, and he’s going to take some monster hits from the Brazilian.
UFC odds pick: Trinaldo to win at -190
