There are few active fighters who have been doing this pro MMA thing longer than Nate Marquardt. The 38-year old middleweight started his career in 1999, capturing the distinguished Pancrase Championship in the early 2000s, challenged for the UFC title in 2007, and has been a mainstay inside octagon since his debut at UFC Fight Night 1 in 2005.
While not a Hall of Famer, Marquardt is about as respected as one can be by his peers. He won’t be around much longer, so enjoy watching one of the sport’s true good guys while you can. This Saturday, he’ll look to avoid his third consecutive loss when he meets Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira.

Matchup Preview
Marquardt’s offense has always been his strength. Operating behind a crisp jab and long range kicks, the 38-year old always sets up high volume combinations. Though he’s a bit long in tooth these days, Marquardt has always been a naturally strong fighter, with noticeable snap in his strikes and authoritative drives on his takedowns.
Though he is well-versed on the ground, Marquardt is a bit outdated when it comes to grappling, implementing a jiu-jitsu-by-numbers approach. Still, he is knowledgeable enough to threaten with submissions in any position, and his defensive grappling is understandably top notch.
Where Marquardt struggles is on defense. When pressured, Nate will often back into the fence and leave openings for clean hits. While he is a strong kicker, he is vulnerable to kicks thrown at him. A fading chin has caused him to fight more tentatively over the years.
Against Ferreira, Marquardt will need to keep the fight standing. The Brazilian has never been able to take too many hits, leading to a standup style where he stays outside of range to potshot and counter. When he does commit to a combination, it’s usually because he wants to get inside for a takedown.
When it comes to wrestling and jiu-jitsu, Ferreira is far more dangerous than his opponent. He averages 2.67 takedowns per 15 minutes and lands with 65% accuracy. While it’ll be very, very tough to sub a vet like Marquardt, it’s easy to see Ferreira taking him down and controlling him.
UFC Betting Tips
Physically, Ferreira is younger, more athletic and comes into the fight with less miles on the odometer. That should be enough to overcome Marquardt’s vast wealth of experience. This looks to be a fight where “Mutante” will be spending a lot of time pressing Nate into the cage and scoring takedowns, making a decision win likely for the Brazilian.
UFC Odds Pick: Ferreira to win at -265
