Sage Northcutt gets back into action at UFC Fight Night 120 on Saturday, as he takes on Michel Quinones in one of four preliminary bouts on FS1. Northcutt has not seen any action in almost a year, but he is 8-2 in his career. He will be taking on a fighter in Quinones who is also 8-2, but one who lost his UFC debut in June to Jared Gordon. This fight between Northcutt and Quinones is one of four on the FS1 portion of the preliminary card, leading up to a six-fight main card that features Anthony Pettis taking on Dustin Poirier.

Sage Northcutt (8-2, 3-2 UFC)
Northcutt started his UFC career in fine fashion as he defeated Francisco Trevino and Cody Pfister. Northcutt suffered his first loss when he was submitted by Bryan Barberena in January of last year. Northcutt did bounce back to get a unanimous decision win over Enrique Marin in July of last year but he was submitted by Mickey Gall in December of last year.
Northcutt said recently to Bloody Elbow that his loss against Gall came because he didn’t make smart in-fight decisions. “I knocked down my opponent two times in the fight,” said Northcutt of his bout against Gall. “I could have hopped on the ground and finished him off, ground and pounded him, but I tried to stand back up, told him to get back up. If you have the ability to take advantage of a situation like that, you should do it and fight as smart as you can.”
Northcutt said he is better prepared to go to the ground and win a fight than he was in the past. He also said that the fight against Quinones taking place at 155 pounds is much better for him than 170 pounds. “The last time I fought at 155, I cut a whole lot of weight, at least for my body, and I cut it on very short notice,” said Northcutt. “I walk around very lean with a very low percentage of body fat. So it was pretty tough for me the last time, but I think it’s going to be much easier now.”
Michel Quinones (8-2, 0-1 UFC)
Quinones bounced around from various organizations the last few years including Bellator and Titan FC and he compiled an 8-1 record. He made his UFC debut earlier this year and was knocked out by Jared Gordon in the second round.
Quinones has been a pro since 2011 and he has five wins by knockout and one by submission. He has four first round finishes.
UFC Picks
I think this is an excellent matchup for Northcutt, as he would prefer to keep the fight standing. Northcutt said to Bloody Elbow that he expects an exciting fight. “He likes to stand up and strike, that’s great. Looks like he likes to throw kicks, too and that’s also great for me.” Northcutt said, “I like throwing kicks myself. So I’m looking forward to the fight and looking forward to putting on a great show.”
The matchup favors Northcutt and he has fought tougher competition than has Quinones. I will lay the price and take Northcutt in this bout.
