One of the best matchups on the preliminary card at UFC Fight Night 120 on Saturday night in Virginia on FS1 is a battle of unbeaten, as Tatiana Suarez takes on Viviane Pereira. Suarez is 4-0, including 1-0 in the UFC, while Pereira is 13-0, including 2-0 in the UFC. Suarez won her UFC debut last July, as she submitted Amanda Cooper, but inexplicably, the UFC has not given her another fight until now. Pereira is coming off a win against Jamie Moyle at UFC 212. This fight between Suarez and Pereira is one of four on the FS1 portion of the preliminary card, leading up to a six-fight main card that features Anthony Pettis taking on Dustin Poirier.

Tatiana Suarez (4-0, 1-0 UFC)
Suarez won her UFC last July, as she submitted Amanda Cooper in the final of the Ultimate Fighter 23 strawweight tournament. The previous four bouts for Suarez were all in Gladiator Challenge. Suarez made her MMA debut in 2014 and won by unanimous decision. That is the only fight to go to a decision for Suarez, as her other three wins were finishes, two that occurred in the first round.
Suarez has had trouble finding training partners who are the same size and have similar skills, so injuries have been an issue. “Sometimes the size difference is extreme,” she said recently to FloCombat. “I walk around at 130 (pounds) and sometimes I spar with someone who is 200 pounds.” Injuries are always a concern for Suarez, so she is a lot more careful about who she spars with.
Viviane Pereira (13-0, 2-0 UFC)
Pereira made her name in XFC International, as she won all of her fights. She made her UFC debut against Valerie Letourneau at UFC 2016 last year and she won that fight by split decision. She followed up that win with a unanimous decision win against Jamie Moyle in June of this year.
Pereira has fought just once outside of Brazil, beating Letourneau. Pereira has won four times by knockout in her career and twice by submission. Before she came into the UFC, Pereira finished six of 11 opponents but many of those wins came against weak opposition. Five of the last six Pereira fights have gone to a decision.
UFC Picks
This is an interesting matchup between two fighters looking to make their way up the strawweight rankings. Pereira has more experience but I don’t know that you can give her that much credit, as she fought no one of note in Brazil and her recent wins have not been that impressive. Suarez has only fought four times but she has looked good every time and there is no question she will have the edge in speed and on the mat. The layoff is a bit of a concern in backing Suarez but Pereira isn’t a top level opponent, the lack of action shouldn’t be as much of a concern. I don’t know that Pereira can keep this fight standing and when it goes the mat the edge will be with Suarez and I think she will have a good chance to get a finish. The price is a little bit higher than I would prefer, but I think Suarez is the clear choice in this fight.
