THE LEAD-IN
The 22-year old Darren Till is a decorated Muay Thai champion, and he flashed considerable standup skills in his UFC debut against Wendell de Oliveira. Taking the fight on just nine days notice, Till picked the Brazilian apart in the first round and knocked him out in the second. It was his ninth KO/TKO in 13 career victories.
“I’ve trained since I was about 10 year old,” said Till. “I had a few amateur fights but I had a lot of distraction and a bit of trouble outside the gym so I decided to make the move with my coach Colin Heron and Marcelo Brigadeiro to Brazil. I always knew when I got into MMA that I’d get into the UFC and be a champion.”
Dalby signed with the UFC earlier this year after claiming the Cage Warriors welterweight title in 2014 and defending it this past November. The Swede then got called up to the UFC, where he won a hard-fought split decision over Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos this past May. He currently trains at Rumble Sports, which is one of the best-known gyms in Copenhagen.
FIGHT BREAKDOWN AND PREDICTION
Dalby might be a prospect, but he is a polished one. Although he’s pretty well-rounded, but prefers to let his strikes do most of the work. While he doesn’t possess crazy power, he makes up for it with a high-volume output that scores points.
As for Till, there really isn’t too much to go on. We know about his Muay Thai background, but most of his prior UFC experience consists of tiny regional promotions in Brazil. Still, with 11 finishes in 13 career victories, it’s obvious that the kid has a good killer extinct. However, we have to question whether he’s got a three-dimensional game when his background is concentrated around striking. Till has earned a reputation as a knockout artist, but his opposition has been relatively light until now.
This is a hard fight to pick a winner, but I think you have to lean towards Dalby’s experience with Cage Warriors. It’s a promotion that produced a slew of legit UFC fighters, including the night’s headliner, Joe Duffy, and superstar Conor McGregor. The fact that Till is a former Muay Thai champion is undeniably sexy, but that doesn’t automatically translate to success inside the octagon. The pick is Dalby to take a clinch-heavy approach en route to a unanimous decision victory.
