In the UFC, fighting on the prelims is equivalent to being on the second unit of an NBA squad - it’s filled with hopefuls trying to earn a starting position, veterans who know their roles, and bench players barely hanging onto their jobs. It’s no different at this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Dublin. Let’s take a look at the lead-in to the main card along with a few fight odds - which can shift as more action comes in.
LIGHTWEIGHTS: Norman Parke -275 vs. Reza Madadi +230
Northern Ireland’s Norman Parke - 21-4-1 - faces Iran’s Reza Madadi - 13-3 - in the “headlining” prelim bout. While neither man have the look of a future contender, they do have the potential to become mainstays in a loaded 155-pound division. The most intriguing storyline here is that Madadi will be fighting for the first time since serving a prison stint for burglary.
LIGHTWEIGHTS: Stevie Ray -425 vs. Mickael Lebout +320
Former Cage Warriors champion Stevie Ray meets Frenchman Mickael Lebout in a matchup featuring the biggest betting disparity on the entire card. Oddsmakers obviously love Ray’s experience in Cage Warriors, which is one of Europe’s best MMA promotions.
FLYWEIGHTS: Neil Seery -140 vs. Jon Delos Reyes +110
Ireland’s Neil Seery - 15-11 - gets a home match against Guam’s Jon Delos Reyes - 8-4, and both will be fighting for job security as fringe flyweights. Even in a thin division like flyweight, Reyes would almost certainly be cut with a loss - he’s 1-2 in the UFC.
WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHTS: Aisling Daly -140 vs. Ericka Almeida +110
TUF 20 quarterfinalist Aisling Daly - 15-5 - will represent her country against Brazil’s Ericka Almeida - 7-1 - who will be making her UFC debut. Daly is a good striker going against a talented submission artist in Almeida. The Brazilian has notched six submissions on the Brazilian circuit in seven career victories.
MIDDLEWEIGHTS: Scott Askham -135 vs. Krzysztof Jutko +105
England’s Scott Askham - 13-1 - will have the opportunity to build momentum from a first-round knockout win against Krzysztof Jutko - 15-1. Both men have got impressive records, but have yet to prove themselves worthy of fighting on a main card. Perhaps they can change that here.
WELTERWEIGHTS: Cathal Pendred +175 vs. Tom Breese -225
FEATHERWEIGHTS: #14 Darren Elkins -170 vs. Rob Whiteford +140
MIDDLEWEIGHTS: Bubba Bush -250 vs. Garreth McLellan +190
You might have seen Cathal Pendred on a few prelims before. You’ve probably forgotten about it, because while he’s a decent fighter, he’s one of the most boring middleweights around. Against Tom Breese, he’s facing a fighter with far more tools. The UFC’s No. 14 featherweight Darren Elkins gets relegated to the prelims against Scottish Rob Whiteford in a matchup between two guys who love to strike.
