UFC Fight Night 76 takeaways: Smolka spoils the party, undefeated welterweights stay unbeaten and Breese breezes

While UFC Fight Night 77 was crippled by injuries that resulted in the loss of its original main event and co-feature, the remaining fighters rallied to put on a good show for the fight-crazed fans of Dublin. Hopefully you came up on a few bets. Let’s take a look at what went down.

SMOLKA SMOKES HOLOHAN

American Louis Smolka played spoiler in the main event, submitting Dublin’s own Patrick Holohan with a second round rear-naked choke. The first round emerged as a possible Round of the Year contender, with frenetic scrambles and an unbelievable pace. Smolka looked smooth under pressure, pulling Holohan to the mat, opening him up with ground and pound and taking the back en route to the submission.

PARKE CRUISES BY MADADI

TUF: The Smashes winner easily outpointed Reza Madadi in the co-main event. Madadi, fighting for the first time since serving prison time for burglary, looked listless as he never found his rhythm. Parke clearly got the better of the standup and scored a takedown in the third round. Parke bucked a two-fight losing streak with the victory.

DALBY AND TILL GO TOE-TO-TOE IN A DRAW

If you bet that this fight would end in a draw, you made a pretty penny. Daby and Till traded blows in a slugfest that ended in a majority draw - and neither man seemed too disappointed about the outcome. Till dominated the first round by flooring the Dane, but Dalby survived despite taking considerable damage.

After an even second round, Dalby took over in the third, punishing the exhausted Till with headkicks and brutal knee. Dalby then took Till to the ground and procured full mount but could not finish the English fighter.

DALY SWEEPS SCORECARDS AGAINST ALMEIDA

Aisling Daly, an SBG Ireland fighter, earned the unanimous decision nod against former Jungle Fight champ Ericka Ameida. Daly controlled from the onset, landing inside combinations, controlling the clinch and taking down the Brazilian throuhgout.

JOTKO EARNS NOD OVER ASKHAM

Krzysztof Jotko edged out former BAMMA champion Scott Askham in a close split decision, although the fight wasn’t as close as the scores imply. Jotko ate a few kicks to the leg and face and fended off a few submission attempts to batter Askham, who left the fight bleeding from multiple cuts.

BREESE STAYS UNDEFEATED

Tristar Gym’s Tom Breese moved to 9-0 and did something that nobody has done for almost five years: finish Cathal Pendred. Breese looked sensational, knocking down Pendred and breaking his nose with a counter left inside the first minute. From there, a body kick and brutal left hands caused Pendred to turtle up before the ref stopped the bout.
