With UFC Fight Night 76 in the books, we jump right back into the octagon a few weeks later with UFC Fight Night 77 in Brazil. In the headliner, we get a slugfest between two legends, Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort. In the co-feature, former light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira will take on up-and-coming Patrick Cummins. And wouldn’t you know it, you can bet on these two fights right now in our online UFC odds.
MAIN EVENT, Middleweights
Dan Henderson +250 vs. Vitor Belfort -325
38-year old Vitor Belfort is coming off a loss to Chris Weidman, and it’s likely the last time we’ll ever see the famed Brazilian fight for the title again. It was his first fight free of the now-banned testosterone replacement therapy, and it was obvious that he wasn’t the same killer we saw in his three-fight win streak leading up to the title challenge.
Still, he’s in much better shape than the 45-year old Dan Henderson, who’s just 2-5 in his past seven fights. While Hendo still has a nuclear right hand, that’s pretty much all he’s got. Even though he has an Olympic background in Greco-Roman wrestling, he no longer has the athletic ability to impose this skill on his opponents.
Instead, Henderson stalks his opponents and engages in drawn-out brawls, relying on his toughness and punching power. It hasn’t been working lately, and it’s a terrible strategy against a powerful, technical striker like Belfort. I’d expect Belfort’s line to only get more expensive from here, so you might want to bet on him now.
CO-FEATURE, Light Heavyweights
Glover Teixeira -335 vs. Patrick Cummins +275
Patrick Cummins might be the UFC’s No. 9 light heavyweight, but that speaks more to how thin the division has become more than his status as a fighter. The American is a very good wrestler who is obviously better than a mid-tier fighter yet far from an elite 205er. Still, he’s 4-1 since making his short notice debut against Daniel Cormier, and it’s time to see whether he can hang with the big boys.
Teixeira famously rode a 20-fight winning streak into a title fight with then-champion Jon Jones, but was completely outclassed by Bones. He then took a tough loss to Phil Davis in his next outing, but has since righted the ship with an impressive victory over Ovince St. Preux. He’s firmly entrenched in the division’s top five, but it’s hard to imagine any scenario where he challenges for the title again in the near future.
Still, in the UFC, a lengthy winning streak cannot be ignored. If Teixeira keeps winning, he stays in the picture and keeps getting meaningful fights. Should he lose to somebody like Cummins, it would be impossible to think of him as a real player at light heavyweight.
