MMA-Open-march-1

The UFC has big hopes of expanding interest in Asia, which is one reason they signed Wang ‘The Dongbei Tiger’ Guan who is a top Chinese fighter. Guan is a featherweight who is 15-1-1 in his career. He is expected to make his UFC debut in Singapore in June 17. “I will continue to keep a clean record in the UFC, showing the world my ‘China Power,’” Wang said in a statement, “It’s a dream come true … the opponents I face next will be the best in the world. This will push me to train even harder.” Let’s take a look at the Asian expansion and current UFC featherweight rankings.

Wang Guan

Not many people know much about Guan who has been fighting in RUFF which is based out of Shanghai. He is 15-1-1 in his career and fights as a featherweight. He is 5’11 and 146 pounds. “It’s a dream come true, my ability is approved by the UFC now,” said Wang.

Wang will be joining welterweight Li Jingliang and featherweight Ning Guangyou as the only Chinese fighters in the UFC. The UFC is expanding into Asia with more events as they are set for an event in Tokyo later this year in addition to another Asian city yet to be announced.

Li Jingliang fought in January in the UFC event in Denver and took out Bobby Nash by second round KO. Li said that it is only a matter of time before Asian fighters make their mark. “Asian and Chinese fighters need more time to develop our techniques,” he said. “But one day we will win the UFC title, and this day is not very far away.”

The UFC is hoping to eventually have an event in mainland China. “We’re definitely working on our first event in mainland China,” UFC’s senior vice-president, head of international and content, Joe Carr, said, “We were successful in Macau, and that’s fine, but our ambitions are mainland China.”
