QUESTIONING “THE ANSWER”

CHANCE THIS FIGHT HAPPENS: 70%

Conor McGregor -175

Frankie Edgar +145

In the vacuum of Rafael’s dos Anjos injury withdrawal from UFC 196, Frankie Edgar was approached by the promotion about stepping up to replace the lightweight champion. Unfortunately, Edgar reportedly had torn groin muscle and was unable to take the fight. However, Dana White framed his inability to answer the call simply as Frankie refusing to take the fight.

That didn’t sit pretty with Edgar, who has been campaigning hard for a shot at the Irish featherweight champ. He unquestionably deserves it, and many feel that his movement and elite wrestling skills would give McGregor a ton of problems. The Answer is the noticeably smaller man, but we can’t forget that he won the lightweight belt as an undersized 155er.

Out of all the fights in the Future Events section, this one seems most likely to come to fruition. If McGregor ever comes back to featherweight, there is nobody more deserving to the task to welcome him back than Edgar.

WILL WE EVER SEE CYBORG?

CHANCE THIS FIGHT HAPPENS: 1%

Ronda Rousey -290

Cristiane Justino +300

Before Ronda Rousey was knocked out by Holly Holm, Cyborg vs. Rowdy was MMA’s version of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. While the matchup has lost some of its luster, there is still a ton of interest in seeing that fight happen. The pair have been taking shots at each other for years through the media, and there is genuine dislike between the two.

The bigger question here is whether we’ll ever see Justino in the octagon. There is no weight class for her at 145 pounds, and she physically can’t cut down to bantamweight. It’d be a shame, since she’s one of the most exciting women fighters on the planet.

WHERE’S ALDO?

Conor McGregor -200

Jose Aldo +160

CHANCES THIS FIGHT HAPPENS: 15%

There’s not a single fighter, writer or MMA analyst that doesn’t believe that Jose Aldo deserves an immediate rematch at Conor McGregor. The Brazilian hadn’t lost in over 10 years and defended the UFC featherweight belt seven times. We’ve seen far less qualified fighters get rematches.

But the fight game isn’t about who deserves what - it’s about dollars. And there are much bigger fights for McGregor than Aldo, who never really became a star. The Brazilian’s best chance to face Aldo again might have been at UFC 196, when the promotion reportedly asked him to step in for dos Anjos. But Aldo turned it down, saying that he wasn’t in fight shape.

Aldo is still young and talented enough to go on a run and chase McGregor. If he racks up enough wins and learns how to promote himself, he could force the UFC’s hand. Unfortunately, Aldo has never been a very vocal person, and that is hurting his career more than ever.
