Fight Preview
Somebody once teased the idea of Conor McGregor fighting GSP on Joe Rogan’s podcast. The longtime UFC announcer responded with: “Prepare. To get. Wrestlefucked.” Apologies for the language, but it’s the most accurate depiction of a possible matchup between the two.
Questions about McGregor’s takedown defense have dogged him his entire UFC career. The fact that Chad Mendes took him down and beat on him for a bit haven’t helped. Though he beat Mendes, naysayers pointed out that McGregor beat a fighter who only had two weeks to prepare.
A fully prepared GSP likely would have a ton of success taking down McGregor. Before Khabib Nurmagomedov, St. Pierre was universally acknowledged as the best MMA wrestler in the sport - to the point where you could expect takedowns and top control like clockwork in any of his fights.
The fact that St. Pierre would be the naturally bigger man here is significant too. McGregor started his career as a featherweight. GSP just won the belt at a weight class 40 pounds heavier. If he’s able to take down the 6’2” Michael Bisping, the 5’8” McGregor should be cake.
We haven’t seen much of McGregor’s ground game, but we can assume that he’s not at the level of other guys that GSP has wrestled down. If he had no fear of guys like B.J. Penn, Jake Shields or Nick Diaz rolling him up, then it’s doubtful McGregor’s ground game would scare him at all.
Of course, there’s always the chance that a sniper like McGregor lands a bomb early and puts GSP away, which is why the Irishman is only a slight underdog. But St. Pierre has always been a guy who minimizes risk, and he is tough enough to withstand a few big hits from The Notorious One.
UFC Betting Tips
GSP’s line is playable, which is why a bet right now makes some sense. While there’s a good chance that McGregor loyalists drive down his price, you can still get a decent return at -160 and protect yourself from future line movement.
