Nothing is more tempting to an MMA bettor than a good underdog. With a slow week for MMA, now’s a good time to browse the sportsbook and pick out a few dogs that could net you a good payout. HEAVYWEIGHTS

Antonio Silva +165

Stefan Struve -200

Ever since testosterone therapy was banned by the UFC, Antonio Silva has looked a shell of his former self. His last bout against Mark Hunt was particularly disappointing, as the Brazilian got on his bicycle for much of the bout and was still knocked out senseless in the first round. So why is he a live underdog against Stefan Struve?

Simply put, “Bigfoot” is still a giant of a man with fists the size of hams -- and he can still hit really damn hard. Stefan Struve is a good kickboxer, but he doesn’t have the power to put guys away with one hit. On top of that, he’s known to have a glass chin and has been knocked out six times in his career. Bigfoot can afford to be a bit more aggressive, and if he plants one of his hams on Struve it’s game over.

UFC 198, May 14

HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Fabricio Werdum -165

Stipe Miocic +140

At 38 years old, Werdum is better than ever, having turned into a superb Muay Thai practitioner to compliment his world-class jiu-jitsu skills. But he’s still 38! At some point, Father Time will catch up with him, and it’s likely to happen sooner than later. What’s more, I’d argue that Miocic is the most well-rounded opponent he’s faced so far in the UFC.

I’m not saying that Stipe is the best fighter that Werdum has been matched up against, but he’s a former Golden Gloves boxer and NCAA Division I wrestler to boot. What’s more, he’s a natural athlete that fluidly combines these skills as a dangerous, three-dimensional fighter. If he can nearly outbox Junior dos Santos and put Mark Hunt on the ground at will, Miocic can do a lot of damage against Werdum.

UFC 200, July 9

LIGHTWEIGHTS

Enrique Marin +240

Sage Northcutt -300

I admit I know nothing about Enrique Marin. What I do know is that Northcutt showed some serious flaws in his last outing against Bryan Barberena. For starters, he gassed out in the first round after Barberena survived the initial charge. Secondly, he tapped to a choke that wasn’t properly applied yet -- indicating that he’s got a ton of catching up to do when it comes to submissions.

I’m sure Marin has watched that fight over and over by now, and I see a fighter that’s racked up five subs in eight of his career victories. The Spaniard knows that he needs to take the young Northcutt into deep waters and expose him on the ground. If Sage gasses again, another loss is inevitable.
