While most people were paying attention to the Mayweather-McGregor ruckus, some major UFC matchups were announced in the past few weeks. Now that the circus is over, it’s time to turn our attention back to the octagon.

In the coming months, we’ll have a new UFC interim lightweight champ, top-5 welterweight contenders will collide, a former heavyweight champ will return to the cage and the greatest middleweight of all-time will headline the UFC’s first card in China.

Let’s get into what makes each of these fights so awesome. UFC odds will be released shortly, so make sure to check back regularly for all the latest lines.

Lightweight Interim ChampionshipKevin Lee vs. Tony Ferguson

“El Cucuy” Gets His Shot

Everyone wants Ferguson vs. Khabib, but who knows when the Russian will be back? One can’t expect “El Cucuy” to wait around forever, especially with a nine-fight winning streak going and a title shot more than deserved. Plus, Lee successfully started beef with him on “UFC Tonight” and a run-in during International Fight Week.

I’m sold. While it’s not the matchup anyone was really asking for, Ferguson is one of the most exciting fighters at 155 today. Dude is just a non-stop buzzsaw of offensive creativity, fighting at a pace that forces opponents to crumble.

Lee just might be the guy that suffocates Ferguson’s high-octane style. The brash young wrestler has basically evolved into an anaconda in his last three fights, systematically securing choke wins in three straight.

Anderson Silva vs. Kelvin Gastelum

Let’s Try This Again

These guys were scheduled to meet at UFC 212, but Gastelum was pulled from the card after testing positive for the sweet ganja. This time, they’ll headline a Shanghai card for the UFC’s debut in China. Bringing a living legend out to charter new territories makes a ton of sense.

Silva is now squarely in the “fun fight” stage of a Hall-of-Fame career, and pairing him with Gastelum should produce plenty of great moments. Gastelum will be happy to oblige him in a kickboxing match, meaning there will be plenty of opportunities to see flashes of the old Anderson Silva - the version where he looked like he was reenacting his favorite scenes from The Matrix.

Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal

Washing Out a Bitter Taste

“Wonderboy” is an exciting fighter that got forced into a snoozefest with Tyron Woodley. While T-Wood bore the brunt of the haterade, Thompson didn’t help himself by refusing to engage either. A showdown with “Gamebred” is guaranteed to show us the Thompson that enthralled the MMA world up to his title bid.

Masvidal is tough-as-nails with smooth-as-butter striking. He murked “Cowboy” Cerrone, a former pro kickboxer like Wonderboy, behind a smooth jab and supreme poise. Can he do the same against a bigger, more creative striker? When two elite standup artists with vastly different styles meet, everybody wins.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Derrick Lewis

Welcome Back, Black Beast

Derrick Lewis didn’t stay retired for very long. The portly knockout artist is coming back to try and decapitate former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum. And this fight’s anything like Lewis’ other ones, it’s gonna be an entertaining slobberknocker.

I can’t remember the last time Lewis wasn’t huffing and puffing past the third round. For whatever reason, it’s really fun to watch an exhausted giant swing haymakers in hopes for a miracle knockout. And the thing is, it’s actually worked - ask Travis Browne and Shamil Abdurakhimov about that. Beating Werdum would be the biggest win of his career.
