1. Featherweight
Champion: Jose Aldo
Upcoming Fights:
Jose Aldo vs. Max Holloway

Conor McGregor might be gone, but there is plenty of starpower in his wake with guys like Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar and the Korean Zombie all in the top 10. This division is just as deep as lightweight, but what gives 145 the edge is the talent in the pipeline.

You’ve got young guys like Yair Rodriguez, Doo Ho Choi and Mirsad Bektic in the 9-15 range. All these guys are in their mid-20s with plenty of time to improve. In fact, you could see a bunch of them challenging elite stalwarts like Frankie Edgar, Ricardo Lamas and Jeremy Stephens really soon. There are no shortage of compelling matchups to make, with stars that could easily headline Fight Night cards all year.

2. Lightweight
Champion: Conor McGregor
Upcoming Fight:
Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier

The UFC’s biggest star resides here, propping 155 up high. Any fight with Conor McGregor is going to be a huge seller, and the Irishman’s exciting style makes him must-watch material. The lightweight division is the same as it’s always been - loaded with talent and marketable fighters.

However, after the top 5 the dropoff in quality is noticeable. No. 8 Nate Diaz is star, but nobody considers him championship material. After him? It’s guys like Beneil Dariush, Dustin Poirer, Gil Melendez and Evan Dunham. The same range in featherweight is so much more exciting.

3. Middleweight
Champion: Michael Bisping
Upcoming Fight:
Michael Bisping +145 vs. Georges St. Pierre -165

You’ve got a champ, Michael Bisping, who can sell pay-per-views. He’ll be facing one of the UFC’s most popular fighters ever in a few months. And the fact that so many people want to see Bisping lose makes this division interesting.

The top five of this division has never been more competitive, with guys like Yoel Romero, Luke Rockhold, Jacare Souza, Chris Weidman and Gegard Mousasi all having strong cases for a title shot. But after that, it gets a bit dicey, with only one real prospect in Kelvin Gastelum and a lot of aging or flawed fighters.

4. Women’s Strawweight
Champion: Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Upcoming Fight:
Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Jessica Andrade
UFC odds coming soon!

Having one of the most violent Muay Thai practitioners in the game as the champ is an amazing blessing. Beneath her is a rich assortment of recognizable names and elite talent that gives this division a number of matchups that could headline cards.

Claudia Gadelha and Jessica Andrade are two ridiculously strong fighters with vastly different, yet equally punishing styles. Michelle Waterson, Paige VanZant and Rose Namajunas are attractive and bankable. And pretty much every fighter in the top-15 has got a ton of heart and grit. There’s hardly a boring fight at 115 pounds.

5. Welterweight
Champion: Tyron Woodley
Upcoming Fight:
Demian Maia vs. Jorge Masvidal
UFC odds coming soon!

Welterweight barely squeaks onto our top five, mainly for two reasons: depth and style matchups. This division has the most fighters that are defined by elite skills in distinct MMA phases, setting up some awesome clashes.

Demian Maia imposes an elite submission game on his oppponents. Wonderboy Thompson is an exciting kickboxer (when he’s not fighting Tyron Woodley). Robbie Lawler is a headhunter with iron fists. Jorge Masvidal is a crisp boxer. This is a divisions where style vs. style bouts are the norm, and that speaks to hardcore MMA fans.
