Today, we’re focusing on the most exciting weight class in the UFC: the welterweights. It’s a weight class where the top-7 could beat each other on any given night, and it’s currently ruled by Robbie Lawler. Yes, the same Lawler that has barely held onto the belt after eking out wins in bloody trench wars. Let’s take a look at the important upcoming matchups.

Tyron Woodley vs. Robbie Lawler
ODDS COMING SOON!
So now we know that Lawler will make his third title defense against Tyron Woodley. But Woodley doesn’t inspire the same promise of violence that Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit do. But this is Robbie Lawler we’re talking about -- the guy doesn’t know how to be boring. And it’s not like Woodley is a grinder either, he’s probably the most athletic dude in the top-10.
The welterweight champ won 2015 Fight of the Year for his epic encounter with MacDonald and put up another candidate for 2016 in his January fight with Carlos Condit. Does he have another one in him?
WONDERBOY IS COMING
UFC Fight Night 89, June 18
Rory MacDonald -110
Stephen Thompson -120
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over -155, under +135
Thompson’s electrifying win over Johny Hendricks threw a monkey wrench into the title picture. That he beat the former champ isn’t the whole story -- it’s how he won. His kung fu-like fighting style tore into the Hendricks from the onset, electrifying the crowd and finishing a guy whose never been stopped in the first.
If he gets by Rory MacDonald, who was a few minutes away from winning the welterweight belt, Thompson gets a title shot. He’s too fan-friendly not to be a star if he keeps on winning. You only need to watch about a minute of his highlights to know what I’m talking about.
FIGHTERS TO WATCH
Carlos Condit
Demian Maia
Neil Magny
After losing a controversial decision to Robbie Lawler, the ultra-violent Carlos Condit is pondering his next move, which might be retirement. Say it ain’t so, Carlos. It’d be sad to see one of the division’s most exciting fighters leave in his prime. This guy is just a non-stop whirlwind of elbows, knees, kicks and punches. It’s just awesome to watch.
Demian Maia is a wet blanket. Not in terms of personality, but in how he smothers opponents into submission. Normally, this would make him a boring fighter, but every division needs a high-level grinder. Watching guys try to figure out his stifling offense is becoming a compelling storyline at 170.
Neil Magny was one of those guys that Maia suffocated, but he’s the best up-and-coming young fighters in an stacked, yet aging division. Since his loss to Demian, he’s racked up three straight wins over Erick Silva, Kelvin Gastelum and Hector Lombard. That’s a serious resume and he’s only getting better.
