UFC FIGHT NIGHT 88, May 29
BANTAMWEIGHTS
Cody Garbrandt +144
Thomas Almeida -166
Over/under 1.5 rounds, over -150, under +140
Two undefeated bantamweight prospects square off in the headlining act of UFC Fight Night 88 in Las Vegas. Many experts project Almeida to be a title challenger in the very near future, but Garbrandt is a blue chip prospect who also seems ready to make the jump to contender. In their 28 combined fights, only two have gone to decision. That’s amazing considering the fact they fight at 135.
Expect a fast-paced fight between two lighter fighters who hit like they’re two weight classes bigger. The winner could justifiably be placed in a No. 1 contenders matchup -- or sub in as a title challenger in case of injury. That’s a great place to be.
UFC 199, June 4
LIGHTWEIGHTS
Bobby Green +165
Dustin Poirier -200
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over -185, under +155
Since moving back up to lightweight, Poirier is 3-0 -- with his last win coming against the highly regarded Joe Duffy. Beating another good fighter like Bobby Green would signal that he’s ready for a top-10 fighter. Although Green lost his last bout to Edson Barboza, he’s an explosive, dangerous fighter -- as evidenced by his win over Josh Thomson. Poirier is allergic to boring fights, as he has one Fight of the Year under his belt and has 15 stoppages in 19 career wins.
UFC Fight Night 89, June 18
WELTERWEIGHTS
Donald Cerrone -165
Patrick Cote +130
Over/under 2.5 rounds, over -135, under +105
Finally, we get to see Cerrone fight a true welterweight -- fighting natural lightweight Alex Oliveira at 170 in his last bout doesn’t count. “Cowboy” gets a stern test in a resurgent Patrick Cote, who is 6-2 since his return to the octagon in 2012. “The Predator” is currently riding a three-fight win streak that includes back-to-back TKO wins over veterans Josh Burkman and Ben Saunders.
Despite a career that spans nearly 15 years and boasts a title challenge against a peak Anderson Silva, Cote has yet to notch a signature victory. Beating a star like Cerrone would arguably be the biggest win of his career.
