MAIN EVENT
Lightweight championship
Eddie Alvarez +325
Rafael dos Anjos -400
Over/under 3.5 rounds, over +105, under -125
EARLY ANALYSIS
Dos Anjos opens as a giant 4-to-1 favorite over Alvarez, who basically scraped and clawed his way into a title shot. After losing his highly anticipated UFC debut to Donald Cerrone, we’ve seen a much more measured approach from the Alvarez, who acquired a reputation as a brawler.
However, it’s tough to see Alvarez beating the champ. In no way has he been dominant, eking out split decision wins against Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis while dos Anjos has been flattening the division’s best. Dos Anjos’ dynamic Muay Thai and superb wrestling doesn’t give Alvarez many paths to victory.
CO-MAIN EVENT
Heavyweights
Roy Nelson vs. Derrick Lewis
ODDS COMING SOON
EARLY ANALYSIS
Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis has forced his way into the heavyweight conversation, notching three straight KO wins. After demolishing Gabriel Gonzaga in his most recent outing, Lewis called for a bout against fellow knockout artist Roy Nelson. Wish granted. Nelson gives The Black Beast an opportunity to notch a signature victory and secure fights against bigger fish.
The UFC odds at BookMaker are correct to give Nelson the underdog tag. Although he’s the far more popular fighter, he’s 2-5 in his past seven has taken some brutal beatings in that stretch. At 39, all he’s got left is his massive overhand right, and if he can’t land it against a mid-level guy like Lewis he’ll have to ready himself for retirement questions.
BEST OF THE REST
Joe Duffy vs. Mitch Clarke
Mike Pyle vs. Alberto Mina
Gilbert Burns vs. Lukasz Sajewski
Duffy is still trying to move beyond just being a guy that beat Conor McGregor in Cage Warriors. He suffered a setback against Dustin Poirier in his last outing, but prior to that he was one of the most promising prospects in the lightweight division. A former boxer with some submission skills, the Irishman gets a tough bounce-back fight against Mitch Clarke, who boasts a win over Al Iaquinta.
Mike Pyle is an MMA journeyman who’s been around since 1999. He’s just 1-2 in his past three, but coming off a win over Sean Spencer. He’ll serve as a litmus test for the undefeated Alberto Mina, who will look to build momentum after beating Japanese star Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC Fight Night 79. If Mina can keep his flawless record intact, he could become an unlikely prospect at welterweight.
Two fighters coming off their first pro losses will collide when Gilbert Burns meets Lukasz Sajewski in an interesting matchup featuring two submission specialists. It’s going to be tough to make any waves in the loaded 155-pound division, but both fighters are under 30 and have time to gain some traction. If anything, it should be an interesting chess match on the mat.
