ROUND 2, FIGHT!
In their first go-round, Dodson put up a spirited fight in the first two rounds, even putting the champ on wobbly legs with a huge overhand in the opening stanza. However, Johnson’s superior conditioning and all-around skills took over in the later frames, and he easily pulled away to claim a unanimous decision.
Since then, Johnson has become one of the UFC’s most dominant champions. Much like Ronda Rousey, he has pretty much cleaned out the division, and done so with relative ease. Part of this can be attributed to competing in an extremely thin weight class, but credit is due to the champion, who has emerged as one of the most well rounded fighters in the sport.
Dodson has won three in a row since losing to Johnson, but also took a lengthy injury layoff during that streak. While he came back to beat Zach Makovsky, the fight was much closer than many expected, as Dodson’s vaunted speed and power was not up to the same standard we had seen before he the injury.
However, in the flyweight division, you’re always only a few fights away from a title shot. And given the fact that Dodson gave Johnson his stiffest test to date, The Magician’s win over the veteran Makovsky was enough to put him in another title challenge.
FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Mighty Mouse is a champion with no weaknesses. He’s great every, and elite when it comes to his gas tank. While Dodson can match him in terms of speed and possesses the heaviest hands in the division, it’s not enough to tip the scales in his favor. What’s more, Dodson’s lackluster performance against Makovsky suggests that he could use a few more fights before facing Johnson again. The pick is Johnson to win an easy decision.
