UFC Odds Online: Daniel Cormier a slight favorite over Anthony Johnson for May 23 title bout

UFC betting online: With Jon Jones out of the picture to recover from a litany of personal and legal problems, the light heavyweight show must go on.

Anthony Johnson (19-4, 13 KOs) and Daniel Cormier (15-1, 6 KO, 4 SUBs) will fight for the vacant light heavyweight title, which was stripped from Bones’ after a felony hit-and-run incident. While the belt will be on the line, it will be tough to consider either man the true champ until he beats Jones – who may or may not come back.

Currently, Bookmaker’s Cormier-Johnson odds have Cormier as the slight favorite, with a minus-135 money line. Johnson is nearly a pick’em at plus+115. The over/under has yet to be set, but I’d expect it to be 2.5 rounds, considering Johnson’s ridiculous power. Right now, I think you should jump all over Johnson.

Make no mistake, Cormier is undoubtedly a top-4 guy in the division. He’s got Olympic caliber wrestling and slick technical boxing courtesy of a top-notch training team at AKA. His only professional loss came against Jon Jones, and he’s even beaten a slew of very good heavyweights in Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Frank Mir and Roy Nelson.

However, I’m done doubting Johnson. Many people that he’s a one-dimensional power puncher, and that’s simply not true. Along with the most destructive strikes in the division, Johnson is a fantastic athlete that’s nearly impossible to take down. In his UFC re-debut, “Rumble” shrugged off former NCAA champion wrestler Phil Davis time and time again and pummeled him on the feet.

There’s no way that Cormier wants to stand with Johnson for five rounds, but he might have to. Johnson is the bigger, stronger and more athletic fighter, and I just don’t see Cormier surviving a standup fight with him. While Cormier is a much better striker than Phil Davis, he’s going to have a big disadvantage in terms of height, reach and power.

If you bet on Cormier vs. Johnson with Bookmaker’s UFC odds, take Johnson at +115. Oddsmakers are favoring Cormier’s wrestling over Johnson’s power, but they’re not factoring in Johnson’s fantastic takedown defense. While I think Cormier makes it to the end of this fight, he’s not going to be looking pretty at the final bell. My pick is Johnson by unanimous decision.
