UFC odds online: A broken jaw is one of the most painful injuries a fighter can suffer, but Eddie Wineland (21-10-1, 11 KOs, 5 SUBs) is finally ready to go after spending more than a year recovering.
He’ll face Team Alpha male rep Bryan “Kid Lightning” Caraway (19-7, 1 KOs, 17 SUBs), who’s looking to bounce back from a loss at UFC Fight Night 54. The two are scheduled to open the prelim portion of the night, which will air live on FOX.
CURRENT ODDS
Check our UFC on FOX 16 odds for the latest Wineland-Caraway money lines, and expect Caraway to be a slight favorite, say around minus-150. However, neither man has been impressive lately and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this as a pick’em. The over/under is typically listed a few days before fight night, so remember to check back in for daily updates. I’d think this three-rounder to have a 2.5 round over/under, with the under being the more expensive play.
IT’S DO OR DIE FOR WINELAND
Wineland has had an extremely up-and-down UFC career. He carried high hopes as the first WEC bantamweight champion, but lost his first two fights in the octagon against Urijah Faber and Joe Benavidez. Since then, he’s gone 3-2, with wins over Brad Pickett, Scott Jorgenson and Yves Joubouin and losses to then-champion Renan Barao and Johnny Eduardo.
Caraway is one of the division’s most dangerous submission artists, notching an astonishing 17 tapouts in 19 victories. His only losses in the UFC have come against Takeya Mizugaki and Raphael Assuncao, who can be considered among the division’s upper echelon. But until his striking improves, Caraway’s ceiling is capped – but his floor is still pretty high.
Both Wineland and Caraway belong in the UFC, but they can’t really afford any more losses as prelim fighters. The bantamweight division isn’t too loaded, but it’s not exactly thin either. For either to be considered a serious player, they need to make a statement now.
FIGHT PICKER
On paper, Caraway is the bigger fighter and a year younger than Wineland. He’s also a one-trick pony who’s entirely reliant on his grappling skills. But man, he’s really, really good at grappling. While Wineland is the better all-around fighter, I’m not sure the culmination of his skills can overcome Caraway’s elite ground game. The pick to win is Caraway by submission in the third.
