UFC betting online: While there are zero title implications in sight between Joe Lauzon (24-10, 5 KOs, 18 SUBs) and Takanori Gomi (35-10, 13 KOs, 6 SUBs), fans can expect a fun fight between the Japanese knockout artist and a man known for racking up Fight of the Night performances.
The two are scheduled to meet on the main card at UFC on FOX 16, which is headlined by a title bout rematch between T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao.
CURRENT ODDS
When it comes to our UFC on FOX 16 odds, I’d expect Lauzon to be the favorite, at around minus-150. However, Gomi’s one-punch knockout power has always been a great equalizer. The over/under is typically listed a few days before fight night, so keep checking back in for daily updates. Both fighters have been seeing the final bell more often than not recently, so expect the over/under to be set at 2.5 rounds with the over being the more expensive bet.
GOMI, GOMI, GONE?
Japan’s Gomi was once considered one of the best lightweights in the world, attaining superstar status in the fabled Pride Fighting Championships. But it’s been a long time since Gomi’s peak in 2007, and since joining the UFC his career has steadily declined. While he still retains fearsome knockout power, his weak cardio and porous defense has caught up with the 36-year old.
The 30-year old Lauzon will look to bounce back from a loss to rising contender Al Iaqunita at UFC 183 this past January. With 18 UFC fights under his belt, “J-Lau” is one of the most experienced fighters in the division, and has drifted in and out of the top-15. While he’s never been considered a title contender, he’s been as consistent as they come, beating decent fighters but losing to the upper-echelon guys.
While Gomi does have good name recognition both stateside and in Asia, he’s been largely disappointing in the UFC. Part of that is natural decline, but a bigger reason is that he simply refuses to tighten up his game. His best defense seems to be blocking punches with his face, and he refuses to address his blatantly poor cardio. A few more losses and he could easily lose his spot on the roster – if he doesn’t retire first.
FIGHT PICKER
This isn’t a difficult pick at all. J-Lau has been a consummate professional for years, and you know he’ll come into the fight in shape and with a game plan to wear down Gomi. I almost always back the more well-conditioned fighter, and in this case it’s Lauzon by a mile.
While the Japanese veteran is extremely dangerous in the first round, if Lauzon can avoid his haymakers and clinch his way into the second, he should be able to take down an exhausted Gomi. From there, it’s only a matter of time before the submission specialist locks onto a limb. The pick is Lauzon by submission in the third.
