UFC betting online: Once a mainstay in the lightweight top-10, Jim Miller (24-6, 3 KOs, 14 SUBs) is in a tight spot after suffering the first back-to-back losses of his career.
He’ll look to bounce back against fellow veteran Danny Castillo (17-8, 6 KOs, 4 SUBs), whose also coming off consecutive defeats. The 155-ers are scheduled to meet on the UFC on FOX 16 prelims, which will be televised on FOX.
CURRENT ODDS
Check our UFC on FOX 16 odds for the latest Miller-Castillo, and expect Miller to be the favorite – he’s long been one of the better fighters at lightweight. The over/under is typically listed a few days before fight night, but I’d expect it to be 2.5 rounds with the over as the more expensive play. These are two tough, experienced veterans that have proven difficult to finish.
MILLER TIME
With a 13-5 UFC record, Jim Miller has enjoyed a long, workmanlike career in the octagon. At one point, the New Jersey native had racked up seven straight wins to creep into title contention. But a thorough beating at the hands of ex-champ Benson Henderson in 2011 sent Miller to the middle of the pack, where he’s been toiling ever since. Coming off losses to Donald Cerrone and Beniel Dariush, Miller’s stock has never been lower.
Castillo’s career has had its shares of ups and downs as well. He owns impressive wins against good fighters Ricardo Lamas, Dustin Poirier and Joe Stevenson, but has never been able to penetrate the top tier of fighters, as suggested by losses to Anthony Pettis, Michael Johnson and Tony Ferguson. Most recently, he was on the wrong end of a sensational spinning back fist KO courtesy of Paul Felder, a relative unknown. That’s a huge setback in a stacked division like lightweight.
If you want to see two skilled veteran lightweights in action, this is your fight. With both men desperately seeking to avoid a dreaded three-fight losing streak, there should be an added layer of urgency. Miller is as steady as they come, but Castillo is the more offensively dynamic fighter. These guys typically only lose to top-10 fighters, so it’ll be interesting to see who wins the role of elite gatekeeper.
FIGHT PICKER
Miller is four years younger than Castillo and the more experienced fighter. But Castillo is taller, longer and has a better standup game. There’s no question that Miller will want to get this fight to the ground, where he has a significant advantage. However, Castillo has a solid 68% takedown defense, and Miller has never been a dominant wrestler. I see Castillo fending off Miller and doing enough on the feet to take this fight on rounds.
