UFC Odds Online: 'Should you bet the UFC 189 championship fight underdogs'

Underdog-Value.ac

UFC betting online: UFC 189 features two championship fights with Jose Aldo defending the featherweight title against Conor McGregor and Robbie Lawler defending his welterweight belt against Robbie Lawler.

What’s intriguing about the odds in these matchups is Aldo – one of the most dominant champs of the era – is a only a slight favorite, and Lawler is a huge underdog as the champ. So is there any value in the underdogs here?

Featherweight Championship:

Jose Aldo (25-1, 14 KOs, 2 SUBs) vs. Conor McGregor (17-2, 15 KOs, 1 SUBs)

Bookmaker UFC 189 Odds: Aldo at minus-130, McGregor at plus+110

The underdog argument: To the naked eye, McGregor is the most dangerous current opponent that Aldo could face right now. The Irishman is a massive featherweight, with elite athleticism that matches the champ’s signature explosiveness. It’s rare when Aldo has no physical advantages, and that’s exactly the case in this match with McGregor.

This is matchup that also favors McGregor stylistically, as both men prefer to keep the fight standing. Aldo possesses a world-class technical Muay Thai game based on dangerous leg kicks, blazing combinations and steady dose of lethal knees and elbows. However, he’s never seen anything like McGregor’s unconventional and flashy standup. McGregor fights long, hits with power and throws a range of kicks that would make Bruce Lee jealous.

While it’s hard to bet against arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, McGregor appears to possess the tools to beat Aldo. Plus, it’s a good style matchup for the Irishman.

Welterweight Championship:

Robbie Lawler (25-10, 19 KOs, 1 SUB) vs. Rory MacDonald (18-2, 7 KOs, 6 SUBs)

Current Bookmaker Odds: Lawler at plus+165, MacDonald at minus-195

The underdog argument: Lawler is the champ. He already owns a win over MacDonald. So why is he the underdog here? This is a case of nearly everybody believing that MacDonald’s time has come. Even as a green 20-year old prospect in 2010, people have pegged the Canadian as a future champion.

But Lawler has a habit of proving doubters wrong. He’s been in the fight game for nearly 15 years, and the experience is apparent when he’s in the ring. The champion knows that a few well-time flurries can win rounds, and is always aware of his standing in a fight. Plus, he’s very good at taking opponents out of their gameplans and transforming technical matches into grueling slugfests. If he can take MacDonald out of his calculated approach, then it becomes Lawler’s fight to lose.

However, I don’t know if it’s possible to get a rise out of MacDonald. The man possibly has no emotion, and employs caution even when he’s ahead. His technical standup – especially a top-notch jab – is the difference here, and it’s a shield that I doubt Lawler can get past.
