UFC betting online: While Anthony Johnson was arguably the most dangerous opponent that Jon Jones would have ever faced, let’s be real here. Bones would have most likely beaten Johnson.
Bookmaker UFC odds had the now-ex light heavyweight champ at minus-275 to win, with Johnson at plus+230 to win. But now, we might not ever know how truly great Jones can be, because there’s no telling how much time he’ll need to get his head right – or if he’s ever coming back.
For now, we get to watch Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson battle for the vacant 205-pound title. Currently, the Bookmaker UFC odds have Cormier as a slight favorite with a minus-140 money line. Johnson is nearly a pick’em at plus+120. This is the same Cormier that got systematically picked apart by Jones in his title shot and would likely be as much as a plus+350 underdog in a rematch. That’s how good Bones is.
So is he ever coming back? If there were odds on this, Bookmaker would probably have “Yes” at -5000. Jones is just 27-years old, squarely in his athletic prime. He could spend a year or so away from the sport and still return without having lost much, if anything, in terms of physical ability. This isn’t Anderson Silva trying to make a recovery from a gruesome leg injury in his late 30s.
However, we’ve seen fighters completely fall apart in their primes because of their inability to win the mental aspect of the game. Paul Filho, for example, was once one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but completely fell off a cliff was after an extended hint in rehab. But a champion and the consensus no. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world being stripped of his belt and suspended indefinitely until he gets his affairs right? We’re not even in uncharted waters here – we’re on that water planet from Interstallar.
Make no mistake, Cormier vs. Johnson is a great fight between arguably the second and third best guys at 205. But even though one man will walk out with a belt, the winner will be in the unenviable shadow of the sport’s best fighter. Because Jon Jones has never been truly beaten by anyone – only himself.
