UFC FIGHT NIGHT 90

Thursday, July 7

MGM Grand Garden Arena

Coverage: UFC Fight Pass

BEST FIGHTS:

Eddie Alvarez +325 vs. Rafael dos Anjos -400

Roy Nelson vs. Derrick Lewis

Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will defend his title against Eddie Alvarez. Prior to his UFC debut, Alvarez was known for wildly entertaining fights, throwing caution to the wind and engaging in straight up brawls. But he’s changed, bro. After losing to Donald Cerrone in his first octagon scrap, we’re seeing an Alvarez that grinds out decisions in any way possible. He even managed to make a fight against “Showtime” Anthony Pettis boring with extended clinches and top control.

It’s doubtful he can do that against Rafael dos Anjos, who’s been trucking over the best lightweights like he’s a T-1000 in a tow truck. The Brazilian has been lighting dudes up with textbook Muay Thai and/or taking them down with a seriously underrated wrestling game.

You wanna watch big guys bang? Then make sure to catch Roy Nelson vs. Derrick Lewis. Ignore their bellies and just focus on how hard they throw, because these heavies takre more pride in headshots than a teenager playing Modern Warfare.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER 23 FINALE

Friday, July 8

Las Vegas, Nevada

BEST FIGHT:

Claudia Gadelha +160 vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk -200

So this fight card hasn’t really filled out yet, but none of that matters. We get to watch one of the best grudge matches in the UFC play out after months of tormenting each other on this season of The Ultimate Fighter. I’ve been watching, and it kind of sucks how dumb current champion Jedrzejczyk is acting. Seriously, her attempt to talk trash and rile up Gadelha and her team makes her look like a jackass.

But that doesn’t take away from her skills. She’s one of the most entertaining fighters in the UFC, thanks to a world-class Muay Thai background that has thus far carved up all challengers. But Gadelha is a straight savage. Her physicality, athleticism and BJJ skills are second to none, and it can be argued that she won their first fight.

UFC 200

Saturday, July 9

T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada

Coverage: Pay-per-view

BEST FIGHTS:

Daniel Cormier +245 vs. Jon Jones -300

Frankie Edgar -110 vs. Jose Aldo -110

Cain Velasquez -330 vs. Travis Browne +260

It’s hard to just a few fights on one of the best cards in the promotion’s history. From top to bottom, and I’m even talking about the Fight Pass prelims, there are awesome scraps all over this card. But we have to start with a light heavyweight championship bout between current titleholder Daniel Cormier and interim champ Jon Jones.

Jones dominated their first encounter, but after 18 months on the sidelines plagued with personal and legal problems, he didn’t impress in his comeback fight against Ovince St. Preux. Cormier is gleefully rubbing it in, and the main storyline now is whether Jones is not the same fighter he was before all of the drama.

Edgar vs. Aldo is a featherweight interim title fight, also known as the official Fight for the Right to Face Conor MacGregor sweepstakes. These are two of the best 145ers in the world, and the MMA skills they bring to the table is just unbelievable. Elite boxing, footwork, Muay Thai, wrestling, BJJ - there’s nothing these guys can’t do well.

Former champion Cain Velasquez is still considered by many to be the best heavyweight in the world, but the guy just cannot stay healthy. If he can run through Travis Browne like he did with most of the other guys in the division, he’ll get another shot at the title. And then we’ll all play the waiting game to see if he can make it to that challenge on time and in one piece.
