UFC odds - Searching the sportsbook for a few good underdogs

UFC-underdogs---Rafael-dos-Anjos.ac.jpg

It seems rare to have a week go by with no UFC event to speak of, but here we are. If you’re looking for an MMA fight card, you can always bet on Bellator 149 this Friday, which features a ton of famous fighters, like Royce Gracie, Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock. But if you’re sticking to to the UFC, it’s a great time to browse our sportsbook for some great value picks.

UNDERDOGS TO CONSIDER

UFC 196: Rafael dos Anjos +110 vs. Conor McGregor -130

UFC 196: Miesha Tate +305 vs. Holly Holm -375

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 85: Frank Mir +145 vs. Mark Hunt -175

TUF 23 FINALE: Claudia Gadelha +150 vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk -190

Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos opened as a favorite for his matchup with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, but it only took a few weeks for the action drive McGregor into chalk territory. It’s impossible to ignore McGregor’s hype train, as he’s demolished every opponent in the UFC so far. But perhaps we should also pay attention to dos Anjos’ rise as well, as he’s dominated elite opponents four straight bouts.

By now, McGregor isn’t surprising anyone. Dos Anjos has ample time to tailor a gameplan for the Irish striker, and coach Rafael Cordeiro is one of the best in the game at prepping fighters for a specific opponent. The Brazilian is only a slight underdog right now, but McGregor’s popularity could drive his payout even higher.

I’m fully aware of how thoroughly Holly Holm destroyed the once-unbeatable Ronda Rousey. But Rowdy’s brand of ultra aggression played perfectly into Holm’s greatest assets. Instead of looking at Holm’s win over Rousey, we should look at her previous two fights in the octagon.

In Holm’s UFC debut, Holm took home a disappointing split decision over Raquel Pennington, a mid-tier bantamweight. She looked much better against Marion Reneau, although it was a workmanlike decision. Tate is a much more dangerous fighter than either of those two, and has a habit of turning fights into grueling trench wars. We haven’t seen Holm dragged into deep waters yet.

Mark Hunt may have blasted out Antonio Silva in his last bout, but prior to that he suffered back-to-back knockout losses. His prolonged beating at the hands of Stipe Miocic was particularly hard to watch. At 41 years old, you have to wonder how much he has left.

Mir is coming off a loss to Andrei Arlovski, but he held his own against the resurgent Belarussian for three hard rounds. I think his reputation for having a glass chin is hurting his money line against a knockout artist like Hunt. But we also forget that he’s one of the greatest heavyweight submission artists in UFC history, and that happens to be the area where Hunt is most vulnerable.

The two best women’s strawweights in the world will face off at the TUF 23 Finale, with champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defending her belt in a rematch with Claudia Gadelha. In their first encounter, most watching scored the fight for Gadelha. While J-Check has become a star since then, capturing the title and defending it twice, Gadelha has stewed on the sidelines.

Gadelha is the most physically imposing fighter in the division, hands down. She’s also a multiple-time world champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. And despite Jedzrejczyk’s elite takedown defense, she spent much of their first fight on her back trying to get back to her feet. That could be the story of their upcoming matchup in July.
