UFC 213, July 8
Donald Cerrone +115 vs. Robbie Lawler -145
Alistair Overeem -140 vs. Fabricio Werdum +110
The Underdog Argument
Robbie Lawler doesn’t do dominant victories. The former welterweight champion is programmed to turn every scrap into intense nailbiters that aretied going into the final round. He’s getting the favorite nod here because he’s the bigger guy and has championship credentials, but this has the feeling of a tossup.
Cowboy is the type of quick, smooth volume striker that can jump out early against Lawler. And since this is only a three-round fight, that might be all Cerrone needs to hang on against Robbie. He’s just gotta watch out for the final round all-out blitz that Lawler is known for.
Overeem is one of the most dangerous one-round fighters in the world. After that, his weak chin and fading cardio become serious issues. Werdum might’ve gotten knocked out cold by Stipe Miocic, but he’s generally pretty durable and specializes in creating the type of ugly fight that The Reem can’t hang with.
Werdum has two viable paths to victory here: try and crack Overeem a few times or clinch and drain his gas tank. Since training with Rafael Cordeiro, Fabricio has evolved into a dangerous striker. But the safe route would be to somehow get in position to use his world-class BJJ to take this fight over.
UFC 214, July 29
Daniel Cormier +218 vs. Jon Jones -263
The Underdog Argument
Despite being 38 years old, Daniel Cormier has never looked better. He snatched an easy submission win over knockout artist Anthony Johnson in his last outing, showing us once again that the King of the Grind still reigns. The man is still a master of the subtle nuances of the game, finding opportunities to impose his Olympic-level wrestling.
As for Jon Jones, who knows how he’ll look after all he’s been through? Actually, we have some idea. When he returned after a long hiatus to fight OSP, his performance was somewhat disappointing. He looked tentative and gunshy, and didn’t exactly separate himself from an opponent he clearly outclassed.
Right now, Cormier is at the top of his game. Jones better be close to the same if he wants to beat him. The UFC odds at BookMaker.eu suggest that oddsmakers feel he will be, but that’s a big assumption to make. Jones should be the favorite, but he’s a bit overvalued here, giving you sweet underdog odds on DC.
