LIVE UNDERDOGS
Donald Cerrone +210
Karolina Kowalkiewicz +160
Danny Castillo -110
“Cowboy” is the hottest fighter in the most stacked division and has never looked better over the course of a superb UFC career. Dos Anjos looked impressive in dominating a generational talent in Anthony Pettis, but if you take away the big shot that concussed the former champ in the first round, the fight might have gone differently.
Plus, you could make the argument that Cerrone’s body of work is actually more impressive than the champ’s. RDA’s best wins have come against Cerrone, Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis. Cerrone has collected scalps from Henderson, Eddie Alvarez, Edson Barboza, Charles Oliveira, Jim Miller...you get the point.
Kowalkiewicz is an unknown right now, but she’s undefeated and her opponent, Randa Markos, isn’t exactly a dominating fighter. I could see the Polish import fighting to win a hard-fought decision. As for Danny Castillo, he’s known to be one of the hardest working fighters at Team Alpha Male, but has been unfortunately assigned some monster opponents as of late. He gets a much more winnable matchup against Nik Lentz.
RISKY UNDERDOGS
Alistair Overeem +270
Charles Oliveira +130
Overeem’s explosive power and world-class kickboxing skills make him a legitimate threat to beat anyone in the heavyweight division. Unfortunately, his permanently cracked chin also gives anyone a real shot to beat him. Against the best technical boxer in the division, that doesn’t bode well.
Charles Oliveira is as feisty as they come, and can lace his strikes with TNT. While his opponent, Myles Jury, is quietly becoming a contender, Oliveira’s elite athleticism makes him worthy of a second look.
UNDERDOGS DEAD IN THE WATER
Nate Diaz +300
Nate Marquardt +325
I love the Diaz brothers, I really do. Nobody has more street cred. But the book on how to beat either one of them isn’t just out, it’s on display at the public library for all to read. Johnson is equipped to a T to carry out the plan of attacking Diaz’ lead leg, lighting him up with combinations and circling out of danger. I just don’t see any chance of Nate gutting this out.
Marquardt has had a respectable career, but he’s pretty much done at this point. This might be the loss that gets him cut from the promotion.
