Vinc Pichel (10-1, 3-1 UFC)
Pichel has fought four times in the UFC, but he has had a lot of downtime in the last six years. He lost his debut against Rustam Khabilov in 2012 and then didn’t fight again for nearly three years. He came back to beat Garrett Whiteley in 2014 and he beat Anthony Njokuanai later that year, but he suffered a broken orbital in that fight. He then was off for more than three years before knocking out Damien Brown in June of last year. Pichel said recently to Cageside Press that things are finally back to normal. “I had a really rough patch there for a minute,” said Pichel, “but things wound up falling back in place where they should be. I’m healthy, I quit that job that was causing me a lot of heartache. I’m training and fighting again. I really couldn’t be happier right now with my situation.”
Pichel said about this matchup against Silva on Saturday that he sees some flaws in the game of Silva. “He is a black belt in BJJ, he’s a pretty good Muay Thai striker. However I see a lot of flaws in his game that I can expose.” Nine of the 11 Pichel fights have ended in a knockout and three of those nine fights ended in the first round.
Joaquim Silva (10-0, 3-0, UFC)
Silva has fought three times in the UFC, winning all three bouts. He made his debut in 2015 and defeated Nazareno Malegarie by split decision. He knocked out Andrew Holbrook in July of 2016 and he won a split decision against Reza Madadi in May of last year.
Silva has five knockout wins in his career and three submission victories. Only two of his 10 career fights have made it out of the first round.
UFC Picks
This should be an excellent fight on the preliminary card between two explosive fighters who have combined to go 20-1 in their careers. Silva has solid striking and submission skills, so it is hard to find any real weaknesses, despite what Pichel said. Pichel is a solid striker who is not that great on the mat. Pichel has more overall experience, but Silva may be the better all-around fighter. I lean toward Silva in this fight but I think the better choice is to play the rounds. Both Pichel and Silva have shown good power in their careers and I don’t think this fight will go the distance, so I will take the rounds under the total.
