Sometimes, a fight is so big that you want to bet on it - even when it hasn’t been scheduled. Then there are those times when an awesome matchup is announced but doesn’t have a confirmed date yet. Don’t worry, fight gamblers, we’ve got your back. Allow myself to introduce...yourself...to the Future Events section of our UFC sportsbook.
FUTURE EVENT 1:
Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino +245 vs. Ronda Rousey -350
Of course MMA’s version of Mayweather-Pacquiao is going to be listed. These are the two best women fighters in the sport, and their all-out styles have fans drooling over what could happen if they actually stepped into the octagon to face each other. Both Cyborg and Rousey have been taking shots at each other in the media for years, fueling the already-considerable hype with each post and interview.
But let’s put aside the considerable obstacles standing in the way of the fight and dive into the odds. Rousey is a significant favorite against a bigger opponent, and it makes total sense. Cyborg would have to cut down to a weight that frankly, seems a bit dangerous for her to even attempt, and if she somehow gets there we have no idea how it will affect the physicality she’s known for.
If this matchup ever does come to fruition, I’d suspect that Rousey would get even more expensive. Her popularity and absolute dominance would prompt a lot of faithful bettors - which is why it might be a good idea to bet while her money line is “cheap.”
FUTURE EVENT 2:
Cain Velasquez -150 vs. Fabricio Werdum +120
It’s the freakin’ heavyweight championship - you better believe you can bet on it right now. But with titleholder Fabricio Werdum requesting not to fight until March 2016, the UFC can’t lock down an exact date for this highly anticipated rematch. But that’s not stopping us from posting odds for our faithful followers.
When the two first met at UFC 188, Werdum handed Velasquez the worst beating of his career to snatch the title. So why is the new champion the underdog after such a convincing win?
There are two major factors to consider. The first is that Velasquez was in no way prepared to fight at 10,000-feet altitude in Mexico City. On a night where fighters puked inside and outside the cage due to the elevation, gassed early and fought sluggish, it was Werdum who had spent months training just outside the city, acclimating to the elevation. Velasquez arrived two weeks before fight night and was exhausted by the end of the first round. And this is a fighter who is famous for having an endless gas tank.
The second factor was that Velasquez was coming off major injury and fighting for the first time in over a year and a half. It marked the longest layoff of his pro career. The last time he came back from something like that, he lost his belt to Junior dos Santos. Ring rust and lingering effects due seem to affect Velasquez, but he appears to be fully healthy.
Fighting at sea level and regular training time should work wonders for the former champion, and oddsmakers seem to agree. Again, I’d suspect that Velasquez only gets more expensive as their fight draws near, so considering placing a bet now.
