DOMINANCE IN THE POOL
Michael Phelps already has the record for any man or woman in the Olympics in terms of medals won. He's going to get one last chance to add to that in Rio in 2016, but he's not nearly the only American who will have a chance to earn some hardware in the pool. The United States has 127 gold medals out of a possible 269 in men's swimming, accounting for nearly half of the gold medals ever award.
In totality, the Yanks have 281 medals in 269 swimming events, a stunningly high number, especially considering the fact that Australia is such a distant second with 98.
In women's swimming, the Americans have 208 medals all-time, 84 of which are gold. There have only been 220 events in the history of the Summer Olympics for female swimmers.
RUNNING AWAY FROM THE COMPETITION
The perception is that the world is catching up to the United States in track and field. That might very well be the case, but it's not showing in the medal count. Sure, African runners are starting to claim most of the distance awards, while Jamaica's Usain Bolt has stolen the hearts of so many sports fans across the world.
That said, when it was all said and done with, the United States picked up 28 of a possible 142 medals in track and field in 2012, 11 more medals than Russia managed.
THE LANDSCAPE RARELY CHANGES
The host nation usually gets a bit of a boost, but Brazil is going to need a heck of a lot of help in most events to reach the medal stand. The nation had just 17 medals in 2012, only three of which were gold.
Meanwhile, the United States picked up 46 gold medals and a total of 103. China was a distant second with 88, and the figure skating and gymnastics mediums are why it had such a fantastic summer four years ago.
The Chinese are certainly the biggest threats here to the overall medal count title which the United States is expected to run away with. When the Summer Olympics were held in Beijing, China amassed 51 gold medals, 15 more than the U.S., though it should be noted that the Americans still came in front of the medal count with 110.
Brazil only managed 15 total medals in Beijing in 2008.
