Three crucial points separate both Haiti and Honduras from the knockout rounds of the Gold Cup, but a maximum of one of these two teams can get into the next phase of the competition.
ODDS ANALYSIS
Haiti was looked upon as the doormat of this tournament, but thus far, it has really held its own. Now, we're forced to wonder what comes next for this team. Are the Haitians really ready to take the next step and reach the last eight of the Gold Cup?
Most won't believe so, and the oddsmakers won't either. This figures to be a tough match for Haiti than the opening match against Panama and an easier match than the second against the United States. Figure a spread of around -1.5 is in store on Honduras when the Gold Cup odds get posted.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Honduras is not an easy team. I think they're a team that will give any team problems in this competition, so we were happy to get the three points." – United States forward Clint Dempsey on the effort the Hondurans put into their first match of the Gold Cup
RECENT FORM
Haiti used a tremendous counterattack against the United States time and time again to come close to putting one in the back of the net. Finishing has been a big problem for this team in this tournament.
The Haitians deserved better than a 1-0 loss to the US in Massachusetts on Friday night, but then again, they probably didn't deserve the one point they got from Panama in the opening match either.
Honduras can count its lucky stars for the fact that it is still in this tournament at this point. The team was beaten 2-1 by the United States in its first match of the Gold Cup, but in the second match, it was largely being outplayed by Panama before a missed penalty was converted into a goal on the rebound by Andy Najar in the second match.
Now, with both teams sitting on one point and Panama very likely to lose to the United States later on in the night in KC, a win for either side will ensure qualification into the quarterfinals, while the losing team will be finished. A draw will only help if Panama doesn't get a point against the United States, and in that case, lots will be drawn to see who advances.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Honduras has looked dangerous in attack as we see it. Najar has been vital creating space in the back, while Anthony Lozano has one of the most dangerous strikes of any man in this tournament.
Haiti has been much better than most have expected as well. Johnny Placide has played two really big games in net, while Duckens Nazon and Wilde-Donald Guerrier have been excellent in space.
Not having Jean Alexandre in this match due to an automatic suspension for yellow card accumulation will hurt the Haitians though, and we just don't think they have the depth to be able to live to tell about this one.
Honduras will successfully do what Panama wasn't able to do on the first day of this tournament, and those three points it will get will end up being enough to finish second best in Group A to move onto the quarterfinals and dodge both the US and Mexico for one knockout round.
