Odds Analysis

These two teams were always going to be neck and neck with one another. They were always amongst the co-favorites to win this event at around a price of between 2 to 1 and 3 to 1, and now, they're both 90 (or 120?) minutes away from fulfilling that destiny. The Germans are the +140 moneyline favorites, just slightly better than the +200 of Chile.

It isn't quite a pick 'em to determine who will lift the trophy at the end of the Confederations Cup, but it's awfully close. The Germans are miniscule -140 favorites to get the job done.

The total of 2.5 is actually relatively high for a major tournament championship, especially knowing that this Chilean side has blanked Argentina in consecutive Copa America finales over a full 120 minutes and just did the same to Portugal over 120 minutes in the semifinals.

How They Got Here

The path that these two teams took to get to the finale look remarkably similar yet all too different.

Chile has played a methodical brand of soccer as we are used to seeing. There have been some cracks for sure, namely in a 1-1 draw with Australia to wrap up the group stage. But if we're being honest, the Chileans have put their foot on the gas pedal when they've had to do their job, absolutely annihilating the Portuguese attack in a scoreless draw over 120 minutes in the semifinals and ultimately beating Cameroon 2-0 on a night when the offense missed chance after chance.

Germany has been the far flashier team. Over the course of its last two matches against Cameroon and Mexico, the team has put seven in the back of the net against just two allowed. Is it a bit of a concern that Joachim Low's side has allowed at least one goal in all four matches here in the Confederations Cup? We suppose. But when you can score time and time again, you can cover a lot of mistakes. The fight back against Chile to draw that match 1-1 was probably the crowning moment of this tournament from Low's standpoint, and he'll hope that that can be rallied into a Confederations Cup triumph.

We suspect this final is going to end up being played out the same way as many other championship matches. Teams are going to have long bouts of possession that don't amount to a heck of a lot, and goals are going to be few and far between.

If we had to guess, it'll be Germany who ultimately strikes home once. There is a slew of confidence right now on this side, particularly from Lars Stindl and Leon Goretzka. These two aren't quite Mario Goetze and Thomas Muller, but they're playing at a very high level right now.

The big question we have is whether Chile would be able to come from behind to win a match. We know it's possible, but we don't think it'll happen against a hungry team that is probably too young and dumb to realize the magnitude of the task at hand.
