Odds Analysis

A tough match to handicap. Chile and Germany are effectively the co-favorites to win the Confederations Cup at this point, and the closeness of these clubs is shown on the betting lines in the match between them. The Chileans are the ever-so-slight underdogs at +170 on the moneyline, a price on merely shaded by Germany at +140. The draw, in fact, is only at +225, a very low price. That said, it's a result that would be useful for both teams. It wouldn't be good enough to clinch a spot in the next round for either side, but it would put both incredibly close.

The total is actually the highest of the tournament to date at 2.5 with -135 vig on the over.

How They Got Here

Both managers will be happy with the end results from their teams in their first matches in the Confederations Cup, but both know there is certainly room for improvement, too.

Joachim Low is going to surely use the 3-2 win over Australia as a teaching tool for his team. The Germans were able to take the advantage early with a Lars Stindl strike five minutes into the fixture. Some shoddy goalkeeping saw the game leveled at 1-1 just before halftime, but pressure in the box caused a penalty moments later. Captain Julian Draxler stepped up and slotted home the spot kick. Leon Goretzka netted the third for the Germans.

Theoretically, that should have been it. Instead, Germany had some more shoddy play at the back and let Australia pull one back. The Socceroos were truthfully unfortunate to not find the equalizer, and Low recognized after the match that that type of defending won't cut it against the best teams in the world.

Chile had the upper hand against Cameroon for the full 90 minutes, holding the AFCON champs to just one shot on target for the entire fixture. Still, it took 81 minutes for Artudo Vidal to finally get one through for the opening goal of the match. The Chileans doubled their tally in stoppage time through Eduardo Vargas.

The hero of the match though, was Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez is one of the top players in this tournament, and when he's on his game, he's really the ultimate creator of goals for the South American side.

Even though Chile had been in suspect form of late, we can’t see this team faltering now. This would be our pick to win the Confederations Cup at the moment, and we see no reason why that won’t turn out to be the case in the end, particularly if there's another match against Mexico looming in the quarterfinals. El Tri, of course, were beaten by Chile 7-0 last year in Copa America Centenario.

But before the Chileans get to far ahead of themselves, they have to figure out how to deal with a good, yet very inexperienced German side. We have a lot of problems with the way Germany dealt with pressure at the back, and if Chile can figure out how to have as much possession this match as it did against Cameroon, this will end up looking like a really easy upset selection.

Confederations Cup Odds: Chile 2, Germany 0
