Soccer Odds - Hungary vs. Portugal Match Preview

Hungary-vs.-Portugal.ar

We're really done with the excuses we've heard from Portugal over the course of Euro 2016. Cristiano Ronaldo and his mates have done complaining about just about everything, but the team has just one goal and two points to show for its work against a bad group which it should've mowed down.

However, thanks to draws all over the rest of the group, A Seleccao still controls their own destiny. Not only will they advance into the knockout rounds if they do what they're supposed to do by beating Hungary, but they'll probably win the group as well.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Portugal has been favored in all of its matches thus far in this tournament, and even though it's failed twice as a favorite, it's laying lumber once again at -220. It's tough to argue with the point though, especially since Hungary was expected to do nothing whatsoever in this group save for perhaps compete with Iceland for third place.

The total of 2.5 and -130 vig on the under is fairly standard for this level, though when you consider the fact that the Hungarians are dogs by basically a goal and a half in this one, the total is relatively low.

TOURNAMENT UPDATE

Never would we have figured that a team with Cristiano Ronaldo on it be held to just one goal in 180 minutes against Iceland and Austria. Portugal deserved much better against Austria for sure than the scoreless draw it got, but the match was a microcosm of this tournament so far. The Portuguese have been so close to doing their job, but they've ultimately come frustratingly short.

Now, Portugal knows that a draw may or may not be enough to go through to the knockout rounds. A loss would surely see it out of the field, while a win would guarantee no worse than a second place finish in the group and would likely win it.

Hungary is in an interesting spot here. The team very likely will know that it's in the knockout rounds by the time this match kicks off even if it finishes third in the group with four points. However, a point here virtually guarantees the Group F title and could set it up for a nice run, knowing that it would then turn around and face a third place team from some other group.

LIVE BETTING

This match is all about CR7. Hungary's defense has been better than expected this tournament, but if Ronaldo is on his game, he's scoring and perhaps scoring more than once.

Ronaldo has had a history of carrying this Portuguese team, and he really should've bagged at least two goals against Austria. Still, his frustration is clearly apparent. He was knocked around by Iceland in the first match of the tournament without scoring, and he had chance after chance on the run of play to score against Austria. The final act of frustration came in the form of a penalty which was hammered off the upright and bounced out, effectively the last of a plethora of chances which A Seleccao had to win that match.

QUICK PICK

Hungary has been a nice story to get to this point, and it's definitely deserved its spot in the last 16 of this tournament. The talent just isn't here to keep up with Portugal, though.

We hate forecasting these favorites to win these matches going away, but 40-year old Gabor Kiraly can only do so much. He was fantastic against Austria and did everything he could've been asked to do against Iceland. If he's under too much pressure in this match as we suspect could be the case, the end result could be pretty lopsided as the Portuguese leave no doubt whatsoever that they'll win Group F.
