LA Galaxy on a tear, now favorites to win yet another MLS Cup

la-galaxy.ar

The LA Galaxy have won three of the last four championships in the MLS and have played for all the marbles nine times in a row.

They've been the hottest team in the MLS as we continue down the run-in of the season, and that's why they are now the favorites to capture the MLS Cup.

ODDS ANALYSIS

LA Galaxy +375

D.C. United +550

New York Red Bulls +1000

Seattle Sounders +1100

Field (Any Other Team Not Listed) +100

Living Large with LA

It's tough to not like what the Galaxy have put together. They simply don't get beat at home, and they have added veterans Giovani Dos Santos and Steven Gerrard to a team which was already arguably the best in the MLS. They've got a goal differential of +23 at home this year, and they are still sitting atop the Western Conference. The concern though, is the run in the MLS Cup playoffs. There are some really good teams in the West which have tremendous home field advantages, and potential dates with teams like Seattle, Sporting KC and Vancouver is daunting.

D.C.'s Dilemma out East

One might think the better bet here is on the Black and Reds, but we aren't all that sure that's the case. Yes, D.C. United currently sits five points clear of the Red Bulls, but we have to remember that New York has the better pedigree of these two teams when it comes to playing in the postseason. The Red Bulls also have three games in hand on United, and their goal differential is significantly stronger at +13 compared to the +6 of D.C. United.

However, it would be stunning if the Eastern Conference Finals didn't come down to these two clubs right now. There isn't another team in the East which has a positive goal differential, and with the two expansion clubs, New York City FC and Orlando City still just trying to make their way towards the playoffs, there are a lot of clubs which just don't feel like they're going to really be ready to make a run at the title right away.

Figuring Out the Field

The "field" might actually be the better bet here to win the MLS Cup, though we still think it's going to be tough to get past the two beasts in the East and the Galaxy.

Before we head to the rest of the league though, there's still one last team to discuss. The Sounders have a really good side. They've got great attackers in Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey, but things just haven't come together yet for them in 2015. That's not to say that they aren't going to be dangerous when the postseason starts. However, the Sounders find themselves seven points and four teams back of the top two spots in the West, and there's still a real chance they don't even make the playoffs.

That's why the field is so enticing. Vancouver is having its best season ever as an MLS side, and Sporting Kansas City is actually averaging more points per game than any other team in the MLS at 1.74 in spite of the fact that it only has a +7 goal differential for the campaign.

One also cannot underestimate how wide open the Eastern Conference could become depending upon who gets into the playoffs. The New England Revolution have a great playoff pedigree, and those two expansion teams we mentioned before, NYCFC and Orlando City both have gobs of talented players who are capable of going on big runs.

NYCFC is still going to need some time to gel, but if David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo can get their acts together simultaneously, City has a legit chance to be the best team in New York.

Orlando City meanwhile, still has one of the best players in the MLS in Kaka, and Cyler Larin is coming on strong as the clear and definitive rookie of the year. Throw in one of the best home field advantages in the MLS, and the Lions are still possible dark horses as well.
