If the MLS season ended headed into this week, FC Dallas would just edge out the LA Galaxy for that crucial No. 2 slot in the Western Conference. The men from the Lone Star State will have the edge thanks to the fact that they have two fewer matches played than Los Angeles no matter what happens on Sunday, but a win at the StubHub Center feels like a must for the Galaxy if they have any chance to ultimately hop into the top two slots.
ODDS ANALYSIS
LA is going to be handicapped just a bit in this one, knowing that it has to play a CONCACAF Champions League match on Wednesday in Trinidad & Tobago. This is going to be a long week for sure, though it is clear that many veterans won't play in the Champions League match to stay fresh for this one.
There are still no odds posted for this fixture as of Tuesday night, namely due to the fact that the Galaxy have to play on Wednesday.
KEY INJURIES
Even though the Galaxy are struggling at the moment, it's tough to blame injuries. All of their top names have been out in full force, and the only absentees have been Jose Villarreal and Todd Dunivant, both of which are expected to be back in training this week and could get back on the pitch shortly.
In fact, FC Dallas is in far worse shape. Bakary Soumare is the biggest concern with a concussion, but Stephen Keel, Kellyn Acosta and Mauro Diaz are all worth monitoring as the week wears on as well.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"We probably have to get other players in. We'll score a goal by the end of the season, I'm sure of it." – Galaxy manager Bruce Arena on his team's goalless streak which has reached three consecutive matches
RECENT FORM
The Galaxy can score goals. We're sure of it. Robbie Keane, Sebastian Lletget, Gyasi Zardes, Steven Gerrard, Alan Gordon… the list goes on and on of capable scorers. Of late though, no one has been able to hit the back of the net. Three straight matches have come and gone without a goal, and only one point has been procured as a result. That's why the Galaxy have dropped from the top spot in the West to third best, and even a playoff spot isn't a total guarantee at the moment.
FC Dallas is coming off of a rather disappointing 3-1 loss to an out of form Sporting Kansas City side last week, but it's tough to argue with its recent results in general. Blas Perez and the gang had scored three consecutive triumphs before that setback.
Three straight FCD games have gone past the total.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Will the real LA Galaxy please stand up? This is the toughest match of the weekend to try to handicap. The Galaxy are as bipolar as could be. They can score five in this match just as easily as they can go without having even the slightest sniff at goal.
We know that there is going to be some value here in FC Dallas one way or the other. The team is on the road, and it is going to be a massive underdog as a result. This is a tough venue to get results in, but we see at least a positive step forward for FCD. A point might be all that it gets, but that will be a great result for sure and one which leaves Galaxy fans nervous with just three more matches left to go after this one.
