Arsenal, Norwich City sneaky choices to win Capital One Cup

Open-Article-Odds28

The Capital One Cup has just 16 teams left after last week's fixtures, and the draw has been set for the fourth round of the tournament.

Most of the big boys from the Premier League are left standing, and that makes this competition a really tough one to handicap the rest of the way.

Manchester City has become the favorite of this tournament after the way Manuel Pellegrini has played things to kick off the Capital One Cup. Basically the entire regular Starting XI played against Sunderland in the third round of the tournament last week, and if that turns out to be the case the rest of the way, clearly, Man City is going to end up being a tough out. The fact that it has drawn home is good for the fourth round, but Crystal Palace isn't the easiest out in the world. It's also questionable when we talk about these big teams once we hit October, knowing that Champions League matches and FA Cup matches are far more important in addition to the regular grind of the Premier League season.

It should also be noted that Man City has only played in the final of the Capital One Cup once in this run since this new era of soccer in Manchester, that coming two years ago.

Arsenal hasn't had the most success in the world in the Capital One Cup either, but we think the Gunners are in a lot better shape than any other team in this tournament. If nothing else, there are only three teams left from Championship. Hull City was in the Premier League last year, while Middlesbrough played in the league playoff. Sheffield Wednesday is the only other team in the bunch from outside of the EPL, and Arsenal has drawn it. Yes, the match is being played away, but of all of the tests which a top flight team could have, this is the one we are least afraid of.

Southampton becomes a bit of an interesting proposition as well. There might not be a tougher place to play than St. Mary's Stadium left in this tournament, especially when you consider the fact that Ronald Koeman's men are so hungry for silverware. Getting Aston Villa at home should be a win more often than not, and if the Saints are lucky enough to get a quarterfinal draw at home, whoever the opponent is will likely end up staring elimination in the face.

As far as the rest of the big teams are concerned, we aren't all that impressed with prices of less than 10 to 1 on any of them. Yes, Chelsea and Manchester United are supremely talented teams, and Liverpool's home draw against Bournemouth in the fourth round should yield a win. That said, the Blues and the Reds are both in terrible form at the moment, and Louis van Gaal knows that he has bigger fish to fry than this as we head into October and November fixtures.

Keep an eye on Norwich City as well as a longshot at 66 to 1. The Canaries have played fantastic ball of late, especially on the road. They're going to be underdogs against Everton at Goodison Park, but Alex Neil's men are going to play hard and play with a full squad every time out. The men clad in green and yellow are still dangerous for sure.
