It was considered nothing short of a miracle when both Aston Villa and Leicester City clawed their way out of the relegation zone this season. It will take an even bigger miracle for Hull City (8-10-19, 34 Points) to clear the drop on Sunday, as it needs a win over Manchester United (20-9-8, 69 Points) and some help for its survival.
ODDS ANALYSIS
Hull needs a win and a draw or a loss by Newcastle against West Ham in a match running concurrently to survive for another season in the top flight of English soccer. Anything less on either account will send Steve Bruce and the Tigers back down to the Championship, where they have spent the majority of their seasons over the course of the last decade.
Manchester United, which still could snare a Top 3 position with a huge win by many goals and an Arsenal loss on Sunday, is still a favorite at +115. The total in this match though, is a relatively normal 2.5 (over -115) on a day where the numbers to beat are incredibly inflated.
KEY INJURIES
It's really sad that Hull City has seemingly run out of warm bodies. Mohamed Diame would have really helped out in attack in a match where it has to go for broke for goals, while Jake Livermore was suspended for the rest of the year after he reportedly failed a drug test.
Manchester United probably won't let David De Gea play in this match after he suffered a hip injury against Arsenal last weekend, especially knowing that he is probably leaving Old Trafford for Real Madrid in a few weeks. Michael Carrick, Jonny Evans, Rafael, Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw are likely all out for the Red Devils from this match, too.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's not lost. We've got to beat Man United, and I haven't done that in 17 years. I've got to turn the tables." – Hull City manager Steve Bruce, who has never beaten Manchester United in his managerial career
RECENT FORM
Hull City just looks like a tired team. The club has lost three straight matches, including last week on the road at Tottenham in a fixture which could have saved its bacon.
United has been in up and down form of late. The team drew last week against Arsenal, which more or less ended any hopes of getting up to third on the table, and that leaves the team at a questionable 1-1-3 in its last five overall.
TALKING TOTALS
The under has cashed in five matches out of six for Hull City, and a lot of it is because of its offense. The Tigers have netted just two goals in their last four duels and six in their last nine overall.
Overs and unders have each been in good supply in Manchester United matches, but neither has a clear edge. The last six have given us three of each, a nightmare for bettors.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
It's not over yet for Hull, and the one thing that we have seen this year is a couple of really great escapes. This would be the caper of them all, and it will have to come off of the feet of Abel Hernandez and Dame N'Doye at the top of the pitch.
You just know that the Tigers are going to be going for it all, as they have to score and have no tomorrow if they don't.
Manchester United's defense is a tough one to crack, but in a match where there should be men flowing forward all game long, we could see a really odd-looking result.
In the end, we think there's a chance for the great heist, as we don't think much of Newcastle's form and think that the hometown crowd at least gives great value, if nothing else to the Tigers. Back them to do their part in the chase for survival.
