Brazil should have no problems advancing past Australia in Women's World Cup Round of 16

Womens-WC-Round-of-162.ar

Brazil was one of the two teams to secure the maximum nine points in the group stage in the Women's World Cup.

The team's reward is a relatively easy draw in the Round of 16, a match against surprising Australia.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Brazil is favored by just a half ball in this match, but any time you can be an odds-on favorite in a match this deep into a competition as serious as the World Cup, that's a heavy margin. The spread is -120 in favor of the Brazilians, while the Aussies are +355 underdogs to take down this match in 90 minutes.

The total is par for the course by World Cup standards at this level at 2.5 (under -125).

QUOTE TO NOTE

"I'm obviously very proud of this team. I read a lot of reports before the tournament, and I don't think one predicted us to progress… This gives us so much belief that we can take on the best and beat them in the knockout rounds." – Australia manager Alen Stajcic on his team's success in Group D, known as the Group of Death

RECENT FORM

The Aussies should be awfully proud of their efforts at the group stage. They won what ended up being the decisive match in the group against Nigeria in the middle game, and they assured their progression and second place in Group D with a draw against Sweden in a match where it opened up with a goal just five minutes in. Still, the one match that scares us about the Socceroos was a 3-1 defeat against the United States, a fixture in which they proved to us that they couldn't truly handle the best teams in the world.

Brazil had no problems in Group E, a group which included a pair of first timers in the World Cup in Costa Rica and Spain. Sure, the last match against Las Ticas wasn't a pretty one, but the 1-0 result should be notable considering the fact that six changes were made from the team which had already won the group with easy wins over Spain and South Korea by a combined three goals.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Brazil is the only team in the World Cup yet to concede a goal, and the fact of the matter is that there haven't been all that many major chances against it either.

Though that will change somewhere down the line in the knockout rounds, we don't see it changing in this fixture. The Aussies just haven't had enough sustained attack against their good foes from Group D, and even though they did score against the United States, that was clearly a goal against the run on play in the first half.

The Socceroos have tired out quite a bit as matches have worn on, and we see Brazil doing the same thing to this foe as it did in each of its group stage matches. The Brazilians should wear down Australia in this match, and when that happens, there should be plenty of space to work with.

Marta has yet to score a goal on the run of play here in Canada, but all of that should change on Sunday. Don't be shocked if she ends up with a brace in what should be a systematic victory for the South American side.
