A Look Back
Wimbledon was awfully weird last year on the men's side of things. Novak Djokovic was bounced in the third round of this tourney, and Rafael Nadal didn't even play. Milos Raonic had the best run of his career in a Grand Slam event by reaching the finale, and he needed five sets to take out Roger Federer. Andy Murray ultimately ended up with a quite easy route to this tournament, and the hometown crowd absolutely loved every moment of it. The quintessential moment of the event came when Murray won a tiebreaker against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 12-10 in the quarterfinals. From there, he rolled to two straight three-set victories over Tomas Berdych and Raonic in the semis and the finals.
Women's Grand Slam events are normally really weird, but last year's Wimbledon was relatively normal. The top seed, Serena Williams ran through the entire tournament dropping just one set along the way, including taking out Angelique Kerber in the finale. What would have been epic would be if Venus Williams had won one more match. She made it into the semifinals, the best run she had in a long time in a Grand Slam event.
Players To Bet
Roger Federer ( +220 ) – If Federer is going to ultimately break the all-time record for Wimbledon championships, this is where he needs to do it. He's taken off so much time over the course of the last several weeks, including at the French Open to prepare for a run at a record eighth Grand Slam event, and that could play into his hands in his favorite tourney.
Maria Sharapova ( N/A ) – Who knows what type of shape Sharapova is really in? She's going to have to fight through qualifying just to get into the Wimbledon field, but if she does get there, look the heck out! With Williams out of the equation, would it really be that surprising to see Sharapova blast her way all the way through this event after her long suspension?
Players To Fade
Novak Djokovic ( +600 ) – Though the price on Djokovic is a good one at 6 to 1, he just isn't playing with much in the way of confidence right now. There's a good chance he's going to have to go through three of the top players in the world just to win this event, and he arguably might not be favored in any of those matches. If Dominic Thiem got the best of him at the French Open, someone lesser might be able to do so at Wimbledon.
Venus Williams ( +1200 ) – We just don't buy the elder Williams sister as the fifth favorite to win Wimbledon. Sure, this is one of her favorite tourneys, and she's going to be one of the biggest women to follow for supporters at the All-England Club. But Williams hasn't won a major since 2008, and that isn't likely to stop almost a full decade later.
